Default How do I change the colour of my plastics the right way

Hey guys,
my bike is still in "surgery" but I was thinking because my bike got all scratched up from the crash why not change the colour a bit.
I want to paint/spray/dye it black but dont know how.
Ive been looking through the forums and saw some people do it but my question is HOW do you do it PROPERLY?
I dont want to just go ahead and try some stuff out finding myself on a bike that looks like an experiment gone wrong. :P
I was hoping you guys had some advice on how to change the colour of my plastics.

Hey Flyin, I'll toss out my opine on the subject. I got an old 06 klx, who's plastic got beat up by riding and the Florida sun....this is what I chose to do.

Stock plastic was crazy expensive.....so...what to do? I bought a used klx300 black fuel tank and bought Maier black plastic shrouds, side panels and rear fender. Note the Maier left side panel is not ready to see our batt so a little bending is required for that part but no biggie.

A guts racing high seat with black cover to finish it off.....looks new again.

Pic of my bike while fitting the plastic, no recent pics ...... I dunked my camera in the intra coastal.

Edit: btw the klx300 tank is 2.6 gal ....too. Pick any front fender and headlight you like. I chose a arcebis front fender and a baja designs headlight.

Agreed that buying the new plastics is the way to go if you want to change the color.

I am happy with the green/white scheme but want to "refurbish" my plastics due to some rash, and I don't like the bouncy front fender on the '07. I am thinking of getting a green/white Acerbis Technik front fender- should look great.

For the side plastics and not paying $60/ea for factory stuff- are you just buying KLX300 plastics from Maier? Looks like Maier wants 83 bones for a pair of KLX 300 ones. If anyone has a good source for KLX250 compatible sides on the cheap, I'd appreciate it.

That rear fender on FM's looks awesome- can a plate or the factory rack be mounted to that? I don't like how far the plate sticks down on the factory rear. I was considering an Acerbis dualsport taillight with the plate mount under it but I don't know if it will mount up to the factory rear correctly.

Yeah, EMS! That is what I am talking about.

Front fender looks great. Time to order that.

Looks like the Dual Sport Taillight fits on the stock setup under the cargo rack. I like it- I just want the extra clearance in back. Is there a major reason you went back to stock?

i dont know what it was with that thing, i loved to look of it, and it worked well.... but it constantly made the brake ( bright) filament break.... so i constantly was replacing the light bulb... and couldnt get it to stop.... so outta always worrying about if i have a brake light... i just said hell with it and put the stock one back on... never have to worry again.

after the last ride i had to order a new fender too...
