how to change front sprockets?
#52
Mines giving me hell right now. I locked up the rear tire by sticking a steel bar into the sprocket and on top of the swing arm and was using a breaker bar and I actually cracked a Craftsman 6 point 1-1/16 socket. I don't want to use heat and risk damaging the integrity of the steel or the seal.

wish i would have known that before yesterday...my way happened to work...
jhoffy...i know the frustration...i was working on that bolt with a breaker bar...nothing would budge it...i was first disappointed when the impact wrench did nothing...but..just turning the impact wrench counterclockwise why using it was what did the job...

I went out and picked up a 27mm deep well impact socket from Harbor Freight - all is well now!

Im changing sprockets and chain tonight on my KLR650. Know how many regular sockets i have broken working on cars, trucks and bikes? Too many, i almost always use impact sockets now.

all this time you were not using a 27mm?.....i been trying to do this project for some times....i was just waiting for coupons from harbor freight....$39.99 impact wrench....$7.99 metric impact wrench socket set....$9.99 open/closed wrench set...

1 1/16" = 27mm. Shouldn't matter which you use, and a sloppy fit wouldn't break a socket, it would round the nut if anything.
So you got the nut off? Not sure since you didn't exactly say - wondering if so whether you did anything different or not.
I've got a 3/4in drive socket set that I will be utilizing when I get around to changing my sprocket - even if the sockets aren't metric.
