Default HMF Muffler Broken In?

Well I now have 3,000 miles on the HMF slip-on and it is starting to sound pretty sh*itty compared to the first 1,000 miles. It no longer has that deep throated sound I loved so much It's beginning to sound like a Muzzy - Yikes

Oh well, at least the riding here in the Sonoran desert has been great - seems like it has been stuck in the mid-80's since October. I did find a large shedded rattlesnake skin yesterday on the single track I ride - I'll give Deej first dibs on it though!

Brian, is that as long as they can go before needing to be repacked?

3000 miles seems reasonable to need one if you ride it fairly hard. When it gets louder than normal is usually the signal that it needs it, though.

At the risk of sounding like a commercial:
You can use FMF's Premier multi layer packing, it is pricey but lasts 2 to 3 times longer then the cheap stuff (from my experience on other bikes) and it is also a little quieter.
My stock FMF silencer had to be repacked at about 500 miles on the KLX.

Or you can do what my neighbor does and repack your silencer once a week with the pink Dow Corning insulation; he got a great deal on a roll of it one night at a nearby job site.

Back in the day, we used some 'stainless mesh" for packing. it worked great and essentially never wore out. If I remember it was for a marine application. Have not been able to find it for a while.
If anyone knows of this please let us all in on the availablity.

go to a local machine shop and ask them for a 5 gallon bucket of lathe turnings from stainless.Usually you couldget a bucket for free or even give a the guy a few bucks for his hassle...just show up with your own bucket.
It might work good as you could really pack it in there....you could even clean it in a parts washer too if you are that cheap.

This was ACTUALLYproduced specific for an exhaust application.
The suggestion was for a packing the lasts not about being cheap !
