Even if you trimmed the stock snorkle, it still has that small opening where it passes through the airbox lid.
I may be wrong or right on this.. but some of my thinking comes from my first vehicle. It was a 66' ford pickup with a 352 motor. It had a tiny 2 barrel carb, and a 3" glass-pack and one of those horid oil soaked filters with the overwhelming bottom and top cover that fit around each other like a box and breathed through the little gap, and it had what were reputed to be Ford's worst ever, most restrictive mono trail manifolds. In spite of all this 'restriction' it kept up with early 90's chevy 454 SS trucks, and beat the pants off 350's all day long it roared up to 110 and then cried for more gearing but not more power (oh and for less than 90 degrees of play in the steering ). I think that the right combo of air and fuel is more important than the biggest combo.

I haven't totally removed my snorkel yet because in breaking in time my bike has really been almost completely stock besides a needle that I didn't put in it so I dont know what it is or how it's set. As it sits, it runs great, and doesn't seem to need any more air and I liked the quiet of having it on. That said yesterday is the first time I've ever REALLY revved the bike out cuz I finally passed the 1000 mile mark) after 9000rpm I had the impression that breathing easier might open it up some more on the top end possibly, but I also may have just been running out of fuel or HP. Either way, once I get the pipe installed, I'm going to mess with it and try it with and without the snorkle and the lid. I like the quiet of having a snorkle in, and I may get the bigger snorkle or play around with some sound dampening material, but I figured it's not broke yet, so I didn't want to 'fix it' too much till I find a need for it.

I wouldn't be so set on using the stock pilot jet. Making your bike better performing involves using more gas/bigger jets. Check out the signatures of others. I ended up w/ a 40 pilot jet, other wise w/ stock pilot the fuel screw would have been out 8 turns (after 3.5 turns out I went one size bigger)
