Default Help choosing after market exhaust!

New guy here!

I am sure this is an age old question about what exhaust is best! I Purchased a 2018 KLX not too long ago! Only had 82 miles on it! It is bone stock! I would like to start by changing the exhaust. I have read many opinions about different brands etc. I am not looking for quiet. Thoughts on Big Gun? What about slip on vs full exhaust? What fuel controller is best recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Looking to open it up for HP gain. Better sound. And to get rid of that ugly heavy can!

Just take the stock one off, put a 2' pipe on the end. Rejet.

I’ve had my share of loud exhaust over the years, still have Arrows on my Street Triple. I can’t stress enough, over time, you will develop Tinnitus and trust me, it’s not worth it. There’s not a second in my life that goes by that I don’t hear the constant “eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee” in my head.

Spend your farkle money on riding gear, suspension, tires and gas.

Plus if you are looking for horsepower you should be looking at the fueling system as well. Exhausts seldom add much horsepower. Fact is Marcelino got more power from his cam timing change for zero cost than probably any aftermarket exhaust can add.

I'd also say, keep in mind what you are doing to motorcycling in the eyes of the general public if you go stupid loud.

Well for starters I already have tinnitus from years in the military spent around turbine engines! Secondly never said anything about going stupid loud. I did say i wasn't looking for super quiet either but would like something that sounds good! I understand I won't gain much HP and there will be more mods down the road. Big bore etc. Thing is still under warranty and cant really do much more than exhaust at the moment! So any input would be awesome! Thanks!

@Gunner632 , you need to read the sticky to better understand the choices and what to expect from the choices - https://www.kawasakiforums.com/forum...rations-44444/

Just remember that YOU MUST chose a slipon or system that has a bung for your O2 sensor. A o2 bung in the midpipe IS NOT OPTIONAL, it is mandatory !

Once you've made your choice of slipon or full system, you can add the EJK fuel controller. It has settings that include proper fueling for running a lidless airbox, which gives you a huge power increase over stock.

NOTE: At this time, there is NOT a method or way to defeat the stock programming upper rpm detune on the KLX EFI.. This means that top HP capability IS NOT available to EFI owners at this time. Therefore, it is likely that best-bang-for-buck would be to "build for TRQ" - which simply means keeping the stock header and adding a slipon (all of which include the midpipe), and running lidless with EJK lidless fueling.
Add the MCM to the above for truly huge TRQ that must be felt to be believed.

Thanks for the info Klxster! You answered my question about full or slip on. Now I'm going to ask about the O2 sensor and please I don't want negetive answers from anyone about pollution and loud exhaust! I am here researching and asking for the simple fact I am new to all of this and seeking knowledge! I am guessing when you say mandatory this is due to federal laws just like any other vehicle. So why do I see things about people installing an O2 delete plug with the EJK? What is the advantage/ disadvantage?

I also read the sticky about exhaust. Any recommendations on slip ons? The good the bad and the ugly! Quality etc. Ok so I
people say Big Gun is loud. Aside from that I have read some goods and bads but these were older posts from years back. Has their quality improved?

No offense intended, just hoping to influence. Maybe "stupid" was the wrong term, but based on so many cruiser riders out there, I don't think so.

So many riders, even old guys like myself, seem to want to go out and let everyone "hear the thunder" to the point of being a negative influence on the general public. Thing is there's a lot of us who would like a better tone (get rid of the "lawn mower" sound) and really do just want better sound without blowing the neighbor off the porch. I'm glad to hear you are one of the latter.

I don't get why the motorcycle exhaust manufacturers can't seem to do for motorcycle exhausts what the street/hot rod manufacturers have been able to do for cars - make an exhaust muffler that can both flow free and give a reasonable sound level. Seems 95% of the exhausts are just noise makers and for the bit of horsepower they add, are a lot of money spent for very little. I hit that issue with the street bike exhaust, but found a bit of a solution when finding an exhaust that has both a quiet core and a quieter core, with the quiet core claimed to be 96 dB, and the exhaust requiring no remapping. I got the quieter core at the same time so I could do better if it needed more muffling. I doubt it adds more than a couple horsepower if at all, but that wasn't what I was looking for. I wanted tone and appearance, like you.

I did mention the MCM, the Marcelino cam modification that retimes the cams. KLXster mentioned it and I have a "how-to" link in my signature. Marcelino originally had dyno chart images showing the stock run and the end result, pulling 25 hp from the EFI European model he was working with. Unfortunately his web location of the images are gone. The images in the document in my link are in the google doc and I tell people make a copy of the document and share the link with anyone for viewing. That way it won't disappear as those photos did.

The MCM is not difficult and can be done when ready to check the valve clearance, doing two jobs with one tear down. Best part of the MCM is that it is free, no cost, just your labor - and as KLXster will tell you,. it works.
