Relays are definitely a good way to go, especially so when your upgrade starts pulling more amps. I've heard the difference can be significant depending on the bike.

I bought a clear 100/80 and it works fine on my bike although if you let it idle too long (like 5-10 minutes) it could melt the plastic but never happened for me and I let it idle a loooong time.
