Headlight guard, protection, shield

Headlight guard, protection, shield
I am doing some desert riding racing here in the next couple of weeks. Our deserts are sagebrush and rocks with some siltbeds too.
I have broken headlights and taken many rocks to the chest in this sport and the very large and expensive looking OEM headlight on my 2009 KLX looks very damage prone.
What options do I have for protecting the glass?
If I unplug the headlight, will there be electrical issues such as overcharging?
On race day, there will be about 1000 riders lined up 4 feet apart for a mass dead engine start at the boom of a cannon. I'm not going to win this race but I will be peppered with rock roost at the start by those who want to win.
Any ideas?

This is of course temporary so I'm thinking I'll just duct tape a wad of cardboard to the lense and figure out a way to disable the bulb so that it doesn't get hot under there.
Is there a link or write up to the switch in the headlight wire?

There is. Search around and you'll find some. For temporary, I would either pull the bulb or find the connector and disconnect. I put a simple toggle in the ground wire, which isn't the "proper" way, but it works.
