Have Muzzy...Do I need gaskets?
I have my Muzzy. Do I need to buy a gasket or two? Do I have to remove the Backfire screen in the air box? What is a good air filter for this bike (K&N, Uni)? A friend is helping me with the carb mods and Muzzy install on Thursday, I cant wait. Oh, one more thing, I want to change the stock spark plug, is there a brand that is better than others? Thanks.

Not sure, the dealer did mine when he jetted the bike for me. Also the mechanic told me to run the bike with the air box cover off, so that's what I'm doing. The bike feels like its on nitrous now, wooo hoooo

I picked up the header pipe gasket from a local dealer for like $4.00
Ref# 11061 Part# 11061-1055 Item desc. GASKET,EXHAUST PIPE CONNECTING.
= edited to just say that the gasket above is the oem copper one. I wanted the spare to replace in case the original has some strange fit from the original install - cheaper for me to have a spare on-hand when I end up doing the change out =
Waiting for my Muzzy Spring Loop to be repaired before I install.
I was curious about the air filters also. From what I have read leaning towards the Uni.
For the heatshield I am gonna try the Moose Carbon Fiber one talked about in this post Exhaust Wrap Post and will probably later redo a mount for the stock guard.
I don't know about the Backfire screen or plug.

i got water in my intake again...... dont think i would run with the cover off, actually i have to cut the bottom of the kdx snorkel so i can face it to the front of the bike, i think water is splashin onto the top of the rear fender and rolling down and into the snorkel, so im gonna turn it around.

don't change the spark plug brand, what's the point? you don't need an exhaust gasket, use the oem one. don't take the airbox cover off, just rip the stock snorkel off and run it that way. you need SOMETHING covering the airbox up. leave the backfire screen there, it just may save you or your bike. send the Muzzy back and buy a BigGun, jk. i am using the stock filter, not sure if an aftermarket is gonna make a difference. i may use a uni, but not a K&N- not a good idea on dirt bikes not much filtering for off-road use.
Anyways this is what i've done with my BigGun EvoX full system. I put in a 128 main, drilled the slide, used a N1TC needle with clip in 2nd position, tried 3rd but it ran like crap. blow torched the crankcase hole (ie. heated up a bit and pushed it through, alot easier than drilling and no mess). removed the smog crap from the engine and capped all holes with rubber plugs from a parts store. I also installed a 13-tooth front sprocket. I planned on putting in a 40 pilot jet but couldn't get one in time. my oem 35 is doing great, no decel popping whatsoever. I kind of wished it did a little because there is no engine braking.
trust me, my bike rips now. i am an ex mx'er and i would say it has at least as much power as my '88 KX125 did. I can clutch it in 2nd and ride a wheelie until 2nd gear hits rev limiter. I plan on trying to shift to 3rd as I ran out of room. it truly is a different bike. you will be happy once you do all the work to it. this is a heavy bike so more power won't affect it like it did the 190lb. KX. you will tell a huge difference though and a big smile will appear on your face.

i have my clip on the third position on needle and the 125 main and the 40 pilot, and its runnin a little rich, air fuel screw is at 2 turns out... think i should put the clip on the second position?

RE: Have Muzzy...Do I need gaskets?
well, everyone's situation is different, but when I changed mine it really helped. Plus, it only takes about 20 mins to get to the needle. I also turned my air/fuel screw 2.5 turns per HMS' directions. If I remember right, HMS says 2.5 turns with the 40 pilot and 125 main. But I'd do the needle position first since it's easiest. The reason I went with the 128 is because I have the full BigGun EvoX system. His directions were just for a slip-on, hence the 125 main.
I'm not sure if moving it to 2nd would lean it out or make it more rich, never quite understood all that and how it works with the needle. But it worked for me.

So depending on where you are having issues, you can narrow down what to adjust. For example, if everything is good except for the top end, you may need to increase or decrease the main jet size. Similarly, if you are having trouble in the mid-range, consider a needle adjustment. If you think it's rich across the board, look at the pilot screw / jet.
I really wish these various parameters could be adjusted in real time. I guess that's what the fuel injection does for you.
