The racks aren't "rated" for alot of weight but you could hang the entire bike off of it. Its steel tubing being held in with four 10mm bolts through the subframe.

theres no way on earth 1 gallon of gas would break the rack on this bike......not even if we were on Jupiter.

I don't know what gas weighs but its less than water (8.3lbs per gallon) and the small plastic container doesnt weight much...so just say it weights 8 lbs. Even the "rating" for the rack is 11lbs. Which as I mentioned above you could hang the bike from its own rack. He'll you could hang several bikes from it. A gallon of gas isn't going to break it.

I think it was A16TONY that broke his rear sub frame after strapping on a gallon jerry can and hitting some rough trails... There's a thread on here. somewhere.

YYYYYup.... don't know who's machine that is or what they REALLY did happen in that photo (there could be a 101 explanations for what happened there) ...but...yup.

Remember the old saying, don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.

I don't know what the breaking point of this unit is... but, the holding of 3 bikes thing is a gross exaggeration of hyperbole to attest to that fact that simple common sense tells me the rack and frame (coming from a professional fabricator's opinion (me)) are a HELL of a lot stronger than being able to support 8 lbs. of gas (or the 11 lbs of rated cargo). The only way to know that for a fact is to put it to a stress test under a hydraulic press like they do at the factory.

But I do know you can pick the bike up off the ground with just this rack because I've done it. So that's at least one bike's weight.

but your assuming that the metal is quality stuff... did you know that the muffler is designed to add support to the subframe too? Gas weights 6.42 lbs per gallon... now throw in another gallon, and the container, then add big bumps and stuff.... what does that gas weight under g forces of riding being cantelevered out like that? I believe you... but i know i dont wanna chance cracking the back half of my bike off... and yes i have picked mine up with it too....
