GPS VS Speedometer

RE: GPS VS Speedometer
I agree with you all, I was following a freind in my 2006 Tacoma and I told him to not go so fast next time. He said he had the cruise set at 55, my speedo was saying 62 or so......
Oh well, I didn't buy it for road anyways, that 3 miles was the most it has seen at one time so far.....

RE: GPS VS Speedometer
My bike is stock and my tach and speedo read just as Nobrakes said..4,000 on the tach=40mph on the speedo, and so on. So is my speedo reading correctly? I guess I got a little confused with everyone saying the speedo is off, but with Nobrakes method it sounds as though my speedo is reading right.

RE: GPS VS Speedometer
Hey Kona,
We're just saying if you compare the KLX speedo to a GPS it's off by 5 mph or so at highway speeds. Pretty common for motorcycles, even most cars are of by a small percentage.

Really? I believe mine is well over 40; more like 45. I'll have to check when I next take a ride. Kona you may possibly have the only accurate KLX speedometer in captivity...

RE: GPS VS Speedometer
Almost all bikes (except for everyone's favorite whipping boys, Harley) are off by 10% from the factor ON PURPOSE. There are big penalties here and in Europe if a bike or car ever reads LESS than actual speed so most manufacturers err on the side of reading GREATER than actual to account for variations in tire sizes over the life of the bike.
HDs and some US autos are spot on vs. GPS speed. My Tahoe and my Volvo are both dead accurate.
Note, the 10% error rarely applies to the odometer. They tend to be more accurate (off by 1%-3%) to maintain warranty integrity.
