Is there a formula or ????

I got the 14/39 setup on my SF super moto (oem stock gearing) with a 104 link chain on the bike. BTW i can swap between the a 14T & a 13T sprocket without changing the chain length!

klas:
thread resurrection! I recall reading this one a long time ago.

From my notes...FWIW:
stock chain for '06 14/42 is 106 link
Ran 13-15/49 w/ 110 link
Now 13-15/45 w/108 link

Great thread!

Useless trivia:

Some of the Kawasaki enduros from the late 60's-early 70's were equipped with 2 rear sprockets. You could easily pull to the side of the road, engage the large sprocket, add your spare links and you were climbing hills like a nut.

Yeah, I remember models like that and even owned a dual range tranny Kawasaki 2-stroke 100 in the 70's...a G-4 if I remember the model designation. The one thing most of these bikes had in common was small displacement and/or low power and low weight. Once power and weight goes up, the strain on systems like most of these bikes had would probably exceed the durability and reliability of the system. Of course, there are exceptions to everything, but I think that would be the general end result. The real ground breaking designs may end up being in the area of 2WD motorcycles as they get all the bugs out of those designs.

can someone help me
all this sprocket and pitch stuff is confusing

Have a 2012 klx 250s
stock gearing
im willing to change the rear sprocket if thats easier to do
I want a little less rpm on freeway right now im around 7800-8000 freeway speeds

My rear is marked 42
im assuming if I go smaller thats better for top speed, which also lowers rpm
am I correct

I think I read the klx 250sf has a smaller rear sprocket
will that one just bolt up? or is it too small

since I dont ride mine off road I dont mind loosing some low end power im just not sure whats available out there for the s model
I was thinking something like a 38 tooth rear if thats even something made

any suggestions on what to get

thanks

If you're not concerned about off road performance, it might be easier and cheaper to go with a 15T front sprocket.
