Default Gearing Questions - What length chain

Hello everybody I am new to this forum and I am doing some research for a friend of mine to find out the best setup for him to run. He is going to be riding about 90% Dirt and 10% road. Basically riding on the road for 1-2 mile stretches to bridge the gap in the trails.

From reading around on this forum I see that a lot of people like to use

13/45 with 108 Link chain

or

14/48 with 108 Link Chain

(they both work out to be about the same ratio)

Now for my questions.

1. If I go with the 14/48 setup and he decides it is still now low enough and drops it down to a 13/48 does the 108 link chain still work fine with that setup?

2. What is a good sealed chain for this bike. I have to use the DID VT2 on my crf because it was designed for a narrow chain but it's so expensive. There are some cheaper sealed chains out there will they work?

Thanks for your help

-Scott

48 tooth you will need a 110 link chain regardless of the front sprocket

Awesome! Thanks for your response. I ended up ordering the stuff last night because my friend did not want to wait any longer. Luckily we order a 110 link chain so we are good! Thanks for the confirmation.

Yeah a 110 ten chain is what you need if you are going to run a 48. You are a good friend to him!

How do you like that setup is it snappier than stock?

This won’t tell you what chain length to buy but will give a good idea on gear ratios.

42/14 = 3 or 3 to 1. This is the stock gearing ratio. Meaning for every 3 full revolution the front makes the rear sprocket will make one full revolution.
42/13 = 3.230 or 3.230 to 1. Meaning for every 3.230 revolution the front makes the rear sprocket will make one full revolution. Or 3.230 divided by 3 (Stock Gear Ratio) = 1.076 or 7.6% gear reduction over stock. So if you are going 40 MPH at say 5000 RPM with stock gearing. With the 13 tooth front the engine will have to be running at 5380 RPM to go the same 40 MPH. 5000 RPM x 7% = 380 + 5000 = 5380 RPM.

42/14 = 3 (Stock)
45/14 = 3.21. 3.21 divided by 3 (stock) = 1.071 or 7.1% Gear Reduction.
46/14 = 3.285 = 1.095 or 9.5% Gear Reduction.
47/14 = 3.357 = 1.119 or 11.9% Gear Reduction.
48/14 = 3.428 = 1.142 or 14.2% Gear Reduction.
49/14 = 3.500 = 1.166 or 16.6% Gear Reduction.

42/13 = 3.230 = 1.076 or 7.6% Gear Reduction.
45/13 = 3.461 = 1.153 or 15.3% Gear Reduction.
46/13 = 3.538 = 1.179 or 17.9% Gear Reduction.
47/13 = 3.615 = 1.205 or 20.5% Gear Reduction.
48/13 = 3.692 = 1.230 or 23.0% Gear Reduction.
49/13 = 3.769 = 1.256 or 25.6% Gear Reduction.

Hope someone can help. I have 14/45 and would like to go with some thing higher geared.
I checked RMATV under KLX250s and KLX300 and nothing is listed lower than 45T for the rear.
I looked at some links on this forum but could not see another bike I could put in that would have some bolt up on the rear hub. I would like to get a 43T and also would be interested in buying someones stock rear sproket.
I would like to keep the front stock rather than jump up to the 15T as I understand I may need to do some dremel work to get it to fit.

Any suggestions?

On the 15T, the guy I bought my '06 KLX from had a 15T sprocket mounted. I went with 14/47 for my preference, but I didn't seen any dremeling, grinding, or wear marks from the existing 15T that he had mounted. I think I would have seen at least some marks if there was a problem, because I cleaned that countershaft sprocket area up to a very pristine condition before installing my new 14T. I also noticed all the factory "protection" pieces were still in place, and I even checked them against the Bike Bandit parts schematic to be sure...though it doesn't look all that impressive for real protection from what I could tell. Looks to me like you'd be fine with a 15T sprocket from what I saw on mine. Maybe someone else has had issues that they could share.
