Default Gearing

Hi guys

New to the forum but not to the bike.
I have an 07 KLX250 and 08 KLR650.

I cant seem to get the gearing correct on the KLX

13 tooth on the front now but the bike revs to hard.
14 tooth good for keeping the rpm down but lacking power.

I need something in between

Any suggestions??

I use 14/45 for the road its not bad still able to do 100k's on the freeway, probably not ideal gearing for everyday use but it's only my weekend toy. I change down to the 13 for the bush/trail riding.

Heres a gear ratio chart that may help you.

Is your bike stock? because there are a few cheap things you can do to improve performance like filter, jetting, airbox lid and or snorkle removal etc have a look through the sticky's up the top they are great for all that stuff.

14/42 is stock 14/45 is around the same as 13/42 so it would have to be somewhere in between like 14/43 or 14/44. Only other way is to increase power and keep the stock gearing.

Here are the mods done in the 12 months i had the bike

Ego bark busters
TKP pipe
Twin Air
Deristricted
13 tooth (too many rpm's at 100kph) 6700 rpm too many for long haul.
clarke fuel tank
B&B Bash Plate

Where would i buy the correct jetting for the bike on line?

She needs a rejet i think popping on when backing off. The higher the altitude the less she pops on decal.

Bike pulls really hard above 7,000 rpm power is great there just need more from 3000 to 7000.

When 14 tooth fitted doing 100kph head wind no more power to be had.

Cheers

Yeah, I've run into the same issue trying to decide between the 13 and 14 cs. When I'm using the 13t, I find myself having to shift way too often in the woods. I'm back to the 14t right now and I'm keeping my eye on Bill Blue's 350 big bore kit. With the extra power the 14t will be the ticket.

I've ordered the OEM 39t sprocket from the new SF model. Plan on doing 14t and 39t for the supermoto setup. I have no idea if the sprocket will mount or if I'll have too much chain slack...

Stock gearing and wheels have been fine off-road, especially with the pipe and rejet. Going from 0-35mph is the bikes stronger point, not 35mph to 65mph.
