Default gearing

i have decided to try this setup. i'm going to order the sprocket kit package from rocky mountain m/c but i'll order the stock package for the klx 300 giving me a 14/50 setup with the 520/110 chain to fit since it all comes in a package. this saves me about 15 dollars and gives me the correct chain to fit the sprocket w/o me having to guess wat size 2 buy. i know a 50T sprocket is rather large but my friend has a 51 on his 230 and i'm ridin a 250 so this oughta work. not to mention i don't ride my bike on the road. just off roadin. if there are any flaws in my plan of going with the klx 300 gearing setup let me know. i'd hate to make a mistake. does any1 know if the swingarm length is the same on these bikes { klx 300/250 } pleasr reply

The front sprocket won't work if thats included in the chain/sprocket kit, they had to go and give us a lovely oddball front sprocket but the rear one will work. I'm not too sure if it will work with the chain guard/slider though. I think I recall 49 tooth sprockets being really close to it but I'm not positive. 14/50 is just a tad numerically higher than 13/45 so that should be great for offroad use.

Ya, the front won't work (well I guess you are not planing onchanging your front)and the rear is too big for the chain glide. I am not sure if there is a way around the big rear. Maybe someone else knows.

if you take off the chain gaurd you run the risk of throwing the chain. that 49 won't fit. i ran a 13/47 for a while and it rev's out real quick so plan on shifting a lot. i run a 14/47 now and am happy with it. if want the 13 front let me know i'll mail it to you.

lcpl0331, How is the 14/47. Still good for the road and good low end for trails. I am going to go 47 or 46. And what size chain did you run and what notch # on the rear snail are you on

I'm running a 14/49 (or 3.5 ratio) with the top chain guard off and its GREAT for the trails... second and third gear through most, and still 60 MPH on the highway in 6th running at about 6,000 RPMs...

If you are going to do mostly dirt, with burms, turns and a bit of 'bush wacking' (no, not that kind EMS!!!) then a higher ratio is what you want!!

the 14/47 is good both on and off road. i like it anyway. i think the chain is a 520 but i forget. i had it in reserve waiting to goon my kdx. when i went to the 47 rear i just thru it on cause the stock chain was too short. the chain adjusters are on the number 1.
