Gas Mileage with a 351cc and Pumper?
#12
Depending on your riding, even 14-47 might be lowish. I ride 15-50, and would like to go to 15-49 as my speed progresses, but even at 15-50 I can take off in 1st gear up a hill that I'd struggle to walk up. 2nd is great for those tight switchback style mountainbike tracks.
On the original topic, yeah that fuel economy is terrible. I've got an FCR35 and Bill's original 331 and get around 100km from a full-ish tank (8l). That's riding mostly 2-3-4 gears in the bush.

I am getting just under 50 with a FCR and a 330 kit 14/45 gears. I was getting over 50 when i got the bike. I am thinking its valve wear as I have put over 3K on it. 7500mile service is comeing up fast.

Ok. The Cable was a little slack and I adjusted all the play out of it. This made for much improved throttle response
I pulled the tank and inspected all the lines and hoses but found no leaks.
I just ran an experiment and did a 80/20 Road to Dirt run and put 39 miles on the bike with complete disregard to any kind of fuel mileage (said another way I rode it like I stole it for a joy ride).
39.6 miles on the trip and 1.009 gal to refuel... Call it 39 mpg.
Much better...
I'll have to see if the pure off road stuff goes back to 20 mpg.
I do love the power

I dont think I ever got 78mpg. Even stock new I was getting high 60's, then after mods in the Low 50's, and now at 39.
I fear that my pure dirt mpg may be in the 20's.
We'll see. I'm going out on Sunday, I'll report back Sunday night.

Mileage will vary with riding style - terrain. My klx with fcr pumper- header-331 kit (From BB best mod ever) would hit reserve at less then 50 miles in tight single track. My ktm 450 does about the same. When doing dual sport runs, on fire roads the klx would hit reserve around 75-80 miles.
On the klx did you do the taffy mod? that will reduce fuel use as well as make the bike run better.

the fcr carb has too long of a squirt from the accelerator pump. The taffy mod reduces the timing of the spray. Some say it is not needed but-I did it on my klx and it ran great.
ALso when I got my new ktm 450- I ordered a jetting kit from JD- That kit also reduces the length of the spray of the fcr carb on a 450!
If your bike is running really clean, and there is no bog when cracking the throttle may be your ok- But it may help you gas mileage.

I'm pretty sure that you can apply the Taffy mod to a Mikuni pumper as well.
Then again, that might not be the "taffy" mod.
Shortening the push rod would do the job.
But its only needed if you get bogging when twisting the throttle.
Could reduce fuel consumption off road... maybe.
