fuel type?
hey guys,
im brand new to the forum, brand new to bikes but im eager to learn. just finished my basic motorcycle class today and just got my 09 klx250sf yesterday. this week ill be getting my endorsement and my plates and hopefully be on the road sometime this week. i dont have the manuals to my bike however, the previous owner didnt have them but i finally found them on these forums, awesome! i had a question on the fuel type however, the manual reads minimum rating of 87? so that being said, what do most people put in their bikes? and when fueling up, how to know the tank is full? is it like a car where you just put it on auto-pump and wait until it clicks? sorry for the noob questions, here to learn oh and i did do a search, but i couldnt find anything klx specific

I use 87 or 89.
I would never use auto shutoff with a MC. Pump slowly and look into the tank. Stop pumping when the fuel gets to the bottom of the fill neck. Hold the nozzle open end up when putting it into/taking it out of the tank. You do not want to spill ANY fuel anywhere around your MC.

congrats! You will love the bike. I always run 91 in all my kawis. I use a 5 gallon can and use it in all my atvs and I hate filling the bike up at the station for only 2 gallons so I just use my gas can.

I use 91 or 93 NON ethanol fuel
since gas stations in Michigan switched to E15 and not posting it on the pumps i search out and found NON-Ethanol and i was very surprised on the first tank i put in was like the bike was super charged
get it a try remember E15 gas is bad for our bikes even E10 is also
E15 = 15% ethanol
E10 = 10% ethanol

I go to a lot of trouble finding genuine benzine 91 & 95 gasoline stations.

Welcome. +1^ on all of the above comments. The "fuel type" thread is in the top 5 for forum discussion.....right up there with "oil type."
Don't use the "auto-off" clicker; as mentioned.
Take your time getting to know your ride; no distractions. ALWAYS gear-up; stay safe!
Welcome, again.

Fuel is a completely different story! It's impossible to find any info *proving* that ethanol fuels are actually *good* for small engines. You might find more info stating how bad it is for 2-stroke engines, vs. how bad it is for 4-stroke engines... but nonetheless, it's BAD for engines! It's a fact that it cleans oil off surfaces that you would WANT oil on, and it's a fact that it dries out gaskets and o-rings. It's also a fact that it turns to goo and degrades plastic fuel tanks and fuel lines.
If you can find ethanol-free fuel, use it! The higher cost will be off-set by the increased fuel mileage you'll get (3-5% better MPG). People seem to forget about that little fact... that their mileage dropped 3-5% when we all started having to use ethanol fuel. I do all I can to support the only local ethanol-free station in my area. My hope is that some day... there will be no more ethanol polluting the U.S. fuel supply.
