Default Fuel tank size terminology

I think I may have a misunderstanding of what my 2009 KLX-250S fuel tank capacity. I used to think it was 2 Gallon plus 0.5G when switched to "Reserve" fuel position. But now I think the whole tank is just 2 Gallon including Reserve, because recently I started riding long range and would run into fuel starvation when about 1.5G has been consumed.

The misunderstanding is from other bikes I have (say BMW F650GS twin), they listed usable fuel capacity, plus separate Reserve capacity. But they don't have fuel tap switch also. Anyway, just a surprise how small the tank is!

Yes, I believe it is two gallons total. Very small tank. I just bought the IMS oversize tank. I had one ride where I cut it very close on fuel, due to unexpected circumstances, so having the larger tank will give me some peace of mind.

The specs list it as a 2.0 gallon tank. I think that's probably for a "California fill-up" (i.e. NOT topped off). Mine holds about a tenth or two more than the spec.

That's right. It warned me not to top off. Says when fuel (get hot and expanded) too high, it may damage some California (only?) Equipments.

I have a 2010 sf and lately when I get to about a gallon left the bike will sputter or cut off on me like its empty. I know I've only got a gallon left cause ill put gas in it and its almost overflowing when I get a gallon in it. Anybody have any ideas as to why its doing this?

It happened to me a few times too. Need to switch to "Reserve" sooner than 0.5G left!

Dug out the manual for my '09 to see what the CDN version has to say.
Total tank capacity (with a picture showing fill level a bit below the filler neck) = 7.7 L
Reserve = 1.9 L (= 25% of total)
therefore
Main tank = 5.8 L (= 75% of total)

So one can expect to go 1/3 of the "full to hitting reserve" distance while on reserve.
Hit reserve @ 100 miles, expect to start walking after 33 more.
YMMV!!
