Fuel Mileage
Hello,
I've been reading and enjoying your posts for some time now. I purchased a KLX 250 in mid July and so far am very happy with it.
My one concern and it seems to be one that many of you share is the fuel capacity. I've been looking at doing some of the dualsport rides here in Oregon and many of them have a minimum distance between gas fill ups of 80 miles. Does this bike have that kind of range with the stock tank or should I be looking for alternatives. I'm just now getting back into riding after about a 20 year absence so for now I'd like to leave things just stock and not get into too many complicated modifications if possible. Thank you.

RE: Fuel Mileage
I think you can get almost 90 miles before hitting reserve on the stock tank.
Deej carries a couple of portable gas bottles in his pelican case. I think they're made by MSR.
Many of us have changed out our tanks...
The Acerbis tank fits without modification (I have it), but I have a little issue with the design of it.
(The last 3/4 gallon of fuel is hard to use because it's lower than the petcock).
The IMS tank is the other option, but it requires removal of your rad fan, and relocating the ignition coil.
It's a much more stock look though, which is actually nicer to look at.
Acerbis = 3.7 gal
IMS = 3.2 gal
stock = 1.7 gal

RE: Fuel Mileage
kmarshall-riding on the street, pretty fast, I get about 95 miles, sometimes 98, before switching over to reserve. If I fill up right after having to switch to reserve, it takes about 1.65 gallons. Stock tank is supposed to be 1.98 gallons I think, so there's a little more there...Probably if you had a couple of MSR bottles you could do 125 or even 150 if you were willing to dip into reserve. You have to consider that your offroad mileage may be lower too, though. You could bungee a 1 gallon tank on the rear rack if you're not going on rough singletrack trail, jumps etc. as it's rated for 11 lbs and a gallon of gas is less than that. That's what I do for longer days.

RE: Fuel Mileage
I rode my KLX with 200 miles on it last sat on the road and I didn't have the tank full to the top but mine went on res at 109 miles Then I put it on res and found the nearest gas stationand I think I put 1.51 gals in it if I remember correctly. The bike is all stock and never went over 6000 rpm all day just cruiseing Back country roads and parks put 138 miles on it that day.
