Cool Noise gone for now......

Took the wheel off. Couldn't see any thing that was dry or scored from friction. I also ran a paper towel between the brake pads several times and naturally got some brake dust. Cleaned all the old grease off, re-greased and assembled. Test drive about 7 miles with no sound. From what you guys are saying it will likely come back but no biggie. Thanks.

The only correlation I *thought* I might have identified was temperature; the noise seemed more pronounced to me in winter.
I wonder if the trapped air pockets in the drilled discs heat up & escape under pressure through the partial opening at the end of the brake pad's sweep??? This may cause the whistle we are hearing???

Mine is more pronounced in heat. I rarely ride in temps below 60*F. I do the same loop every now and then. I was riding in 95*f this weekend and it was the loudest that its ever been. I only get noise after 50 miles of riding when I transition from highway speeds, dirt, highway, and then dirt again. That last leg in the dirt is the hotest leg. I never hear it on the first leg of dirt ridding and I don't hear it once I get back to cooler temps on the coast. I think its definatly temp related and is common on all KLX250S years. A louder pipe should make it go away.

Default Clean the speedo and regrease

I had the whistling problem on my 09. I tried everything to get rid of it. It stopped once i cleaned all the crap out of the speedometer connection and applied a layer of new grease. It hasn't come back 1000 miles later. I always clean everything out and regrease when I have the wheels off. Hope this helps.

It is the speedo sensor. I used marine grease last time it was whistling and the noise has not returned. Silicone grease washed out after a couple of months.

Thanks. When I took it all apart there was still a little grease, i.e. nothing dry but no where near what I had greased it with when I changed the front tire about 6 months ago. I ride a lot in desert type conditions and clean the crap off on a regular basis. It's also good to know that those who have just come to ignore it haven't had a problem, yet.

I agree with the previous posts. I had the same noise in my '07; cleaned and re-greased the speedo drive and haven't heard the "noise" for 3000 miles.

OK...how do you explain the noise of those who don't have the speedo drive gear or cable drive anymore due to replacing it with an electronic instrument panel? Either we have two noises going on here, or we still haven't identified the source.

Is this really turning into a whistling match? I think the OP needs to try all of the suggestions to rid the whistling noise. I couldn't stand riding with mine.

Hmmmm...did any of these noises coincide with a visit to an all-you-can-eat Mexican buffet by any chance?
