Free exhaust mod - GREAT SOUND !
Warning, this mod is a little unconventional but for those who haven't bought an aftermarket exhuast system yet, or don't plan to buy one because of the expense, then this mod will give you some real motorcycle sound for free. Oh yeah, it only takes about 20 minutes too. I will post step by step instructions, but I urge you to perform this mod at your own risk because it cannot be undone, unless you buy a whole new muffler.
STEP 1: I simply unbolted the stock exhaust

Step 2 : I turned on the bike so I could hear the difference in the exhaust sound as I slid the exhaust back towards the back of the bike. Take a look at the pic and pay particular attention to the red circled area.

Step 2 continued: when you look at the pic you will see a shiny sleeve that has slid out of the exhaust header, allowing more of the exhaust to escape from that area. The further you slide it out, the louder and better it sounds. I fond the sound that I liked best and marked the sleeve with a scratch awl so that when I took off the muffler, I would know where to cut the sleeve off.

Step 2 continued: As stated in the previous post, I slid out the exhaust to the point where I liked the sound. Look at the pic here and you can visualize how far out I slid the exhaust.

Oops, forget the previous pic. I also recommend to make small cuts, you can always cut off more, but you can't put the pieces back on.

Step 4: Slide the muffler back into the header. See how nice it bolts back up! And you cannot see the brigth metal sleeve that you shortened with the hacksaw because it slides completely back into the header. Be sure you do a sound check before you tighten up the bolts!

RE: Free exhaust mod - GREAT SOUND !
Once bolted back up, you should be able to see into the header as illustrated in the following pic. This is the only disadvantage to this mod, becuase moisture could get into these areas if you park outside or ride in the rain. I don't have to worry about either so it won't affect me.
