fork spring options.
Anyone know if the 94-96 klx250r has the same forks as the klx300r? As i found some progressive springs for the 250r and was thinking of stuffing them in my 06 klx250s?? there only $79.00 compared to motos $140 and have liked progressive springs on other bikes, any thoughts.

hmm, I am not sure, but have you checked out Race Tech or asked that same question to the company you are going to purchase the springs from? I have used both race tech and traxxion dynamics in the past and would recommend their knowledge in the matter.

I have an '06 KLX, and I used all the internal Race Tech valving and the fork and shock springs for the later KLX300. The '06/'07 models are more like the 300 than the '09 and later models. The 300 fork springs are about 15mm shorter, and the rear spring is about 15mm longer. This was not an issue. I thought I'd have to space the front springs, but the .44 Race Tech springs were well within the recommended preload, and I still have 5mm of preload as is. On the rear spring, just make sure the 250 airbox isn't "scrunched" over to the drive side of the bike...the left or shifter side for the uninformed. By "scrunched", I mean that the airbox mounting bolts have some movement possible at the mounts. Loosen the mounts and push/work the airbox over to the right/brake pedal side of the bike away from the shock as much as possible. This just gives insurance for clearance from the shock spring and preload collar.

thx tnc, I think im gonna wait and get a set of kx forks and swap them, probably be cheaper than getting springs and valves done.I might try to swap the piston/shim stack for rear shock if I can find something that will work in the klx rear shock (44 mm dia).I was also thinking i might try to change out the guts of the klx forks with the kx forks( mostly comp and & rebound valves) as then I wont have to mess with the axle (speedo etc...).

I did the revalve myself on my fork and shock with Race Tech Gold Valve kits. It's absolutely night-and-day on the fork, and it improves the rear shock very noticeably. I did the work myself on both ends, and frankly the rear shock is easier to work on than the fork internals. I wasn't sure of your wording on what you might do on the front fork about changing out the internals. The KLX fork has terrible compression damping in stock form. It will not flow enough oil. The Gold Valve fixes that. I'm relatively sure the KX fork would be an improvement, but the problem there is that you won't really know how the damping in that fork will fit your riding style and the weight of the KLX. I feel fairly certain that I would probably have to revalve and respring a KX fork if I used one on my KLX. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, and it would probably be a stiffer fork. I just didn't really need a stiffer fork, and the extra fitment issues were something I didn't want to mess with. You can make the existing fork and shock work very, very well, and the KX fork is always a decent option too.
