Default Fork Seals... Whose done um?

Ok so I have mentioned before that one of my fork seals is leaking. I tried the film and card trick and it didn't work. What is involved on replacing them? Is it as simple as sliding the seal off and sliding a new one on (once the forks are off the bike)? Any recommendations on seals, such as aftermarket ones? I have seal savers ready to go on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just did the seals on my adv.....never did the klx.

But I used this thread as a guide, I bet with the klx service manual this is all you should need to know to do the klx...both forks are inverted and WP shouldn't be that much different.....at least it will give you an idea of what your getting into.

btw....I think seal savers just trap the dirt and grit in there....but thats a topic for another thread.

Keep us posted and if you do this repair take pics for the rest of us.

I tried using 35mm film strip and at first it didn't work. I took the fork tube out as i had the seal savers ready to go. When I pulled down the dust seal I could see a piece of dirt wedged in the seal. I used the strip again but put a small cut into to hook the dirt out. Worked great and hasn't leaked yet! As for the Seal savers, my results have been 100% positive so far and I ride in some nasty mud etc when up country. Plus they are washable.

hmmm... maybe i will slide the dust cover off and further investigate. I think i may just cough up the extra $$$ and get my forks valved and rebuilt for my weight/riding style.

Update:

I was messing around with the bike, checkin stuff over and notice the one fork was no longer covered in oil. I had put 10ccm of fluid in about 500 miles back. Now this was a slow leak, so i dont believe it was out of fluid. I cleaned the fork and when for a ride and when i came back it was dry. Note: i did a couple wheelies to "test" the seal. So i added 10ccm more fluid and am going to monitor it. Maybe the piece of dirt i tried to get at with the film finally came out.

I can assume I would be able to know if i was out of fluid, correct?

Ummmm....your oil height in the fork greatly effects the performance of the fork....you should know exactly where you fill it and set it at.....it's not like adding oil to a leaking F-150.

Get a siringe and some tubing and check your fork oil height and see what the manual says....just sayin.

Ya i kinda figured. I guess i would rather have too much then not enough. This just needs to get me through the season. I plan to take the forks off in the winter and get a shop to rebuild them.
