Default FMF end can - bad fitting

Hi all,

You may have seen my post a few below about buying an end can. Well anyway today my FMF Powercore 4 arrived.

Can looks nice, but I will say I am a little disapointed with the fitting. I mean they can't have spent much time designing the fitments. Really it can only hold in using one bolt. The other securing bolt doesn't line up. AND you can't really push it in fully to the header if you want that one bolt to line up.

Not the end of the world, cos i do have it secured. But i can't help but feel I would have been happier had it all of lined up, like you'd expect. Also there's a very slight blow from the seal between the end can header. Because you can't push the can down any further. An extra 2 mm and it would be all set, but then the only one bolt that lines up wouldn't line up.

Also boy is it loud.. I wear ear plugs and a decent Arai helmet, and i still think its too loud. I think this bike is louder than my old Ducati Monster 750 with Termignoni cans.. But that maybe just cos I'm getting old ! Maybe I'll invest in that extra part that silences it a bit. I wouldn't be too ride it without plugs in, its current form.

**EDIT see my post #6 ** I did get it to fit correctly. FMF wasn't being sloppy.

It dosen't sound like it is quite on yet. Did you bend that triangle brace out of the way like the instructions said? Mine has 2 bolts holding it and they line up fine although I will say that it took some time with fitment, once done there were no leaks.

I didn't realize FMF sold a muffler for the KLX 250s besides the Q4. Is the power core 4 listed for the KLX 250s or just the KLX 250?

^ The powercore 4 is available for both KLX250S and KLX250SF

I have the powercore 4 on my 09SF. I took a drill bit and reamed the hole for the forward attach fitting until it fit. It wasn't pretty, but it's attached in two places now. I sent FMF an email commenting on the fitment, but they saw fit not to reply.

I don't find the powercore 4 annoyingly loud, I like the exhaust note. I also ordered a Stebel Nautilus horn, People will definately hear that.

I wanna kinda eat my own words. I wasn't happy with the fitting, so i went back to the drawing board. I guess when I rec'd the slip on this morning, I rushed in without reading the instructions. Like linkin5 said, I hadn't bent the triangle brace. Anyway, I did and after a little playing around and following the instructions it did fit on using both bolts. No drilling needed. I Just used a rubber mallet to slighlty knock it until it was fitting snuggly.

The thing I didn't do though is put on any high temp silicone and as a end result there is a little blow from the slip on join to the header.

Is there a problem leaving it like this? I mean will it cause it to run leaner / richer? It's only a slight blow.. If not, then I'll just leave it.

But for the sake of someone searching opinions on the FMF, yes it does fit perfectly. My bad.

I wouldn't leave it on without putting some high temp silicone on it. You really don't want any leaks in the exhaust.

I've ordered the high temp silicone which will get here in a couple of days, but there's no way I could have waited til it arrived before going to a ride. I done 100miles today. The leak is only very slight. Anyway the fix is on its way.

Default Exhaust leak with Q4

I have a similar issue as the OP.

I just installed a Q4 on my bike. I have a slight exhaust leak from the header ahead of the clamp where the flanges stop. I used a thin layer of high temp sealant but didn't cover it completely. After a 2 mile or so ride around the neighborhood the heat expansion stopped the leak. Once the bike cooled, I retightened the clamp. Upon firing it up again, the slight puff of exhaust is still there. It isnt audible but I can feel it.

Should I redo the job only use more silicone or widen out the holes so I can get the pipe seated deeper in the header?

Another thing I noticed (this will sound dumb) but the exhaust seems a lot warmer than that of the stock muffler. Is it because of no cat converter?

Also, 2009 bike with no carb mods, UNI filter with stock snorkel. Ran and runs great, no pops on deceleration or other issues to speak of.

Did this very quick mod to the exhaust to lower it 8-10mm.

Will think of something a little more permanent in the future......

Just caught the melting in time but some damage was done! I now have a 1cm gap between pipe & airbox. Very annoying on a big name exhaust system!!!!
