first 600 mi. service

RE: first 600 mi. service
I did the service myself consisting of checking most of the nuts/bolts, change the oil and filter again, did it once at 250 miles, go over everything, checked the spark plug and that was about all I did. Essentially if its in the manual, probably should do it.

RE: first 600 mi. service
I have been doing most of my own service, but for I took it to a local independent shop to "check the box" for the 600 mile service. They told me that as long as I keep my records, I will be okay for any warranty work that might come up. Don't quote me on this, but I think there are legal reasons that the dealer can not require you to do service there in order to keep your warranty valid. You just have to be able to show that the preventive maintenance was done and done properly.
With that said, I am really hoping that I don't run into a serious warranty issue like Deej and EMS did because I would imagine that the dealer would at least try to claim that I invalidated my warranty by not having the work done by a qualified techician. I think I could win that fight, but I expect that he would try.
If you decide to have someone else do it, don't expect to pay too much. My bill for the 600 mile service was only $26 (I had done the oil/filter change myself already). If anyone tries to charge you much more than that for tightening bolts and checking chain tension, then I would run the other way.
My 2 cents - and worth every penny.

RE: first 600 mi. service
I paid the shop 150 to do the 600 mile service. I also asked them to check the valves, they said no problem and that its included in the service. When I went to pick up the bike I noticed the valve check box was not checked. I talked to the manager and he told me that it was not required for them to check at this service but he would be happy to do it for another 100 bucks. He also said he was sorry I was mi-informed about the valve check but not to worry because they would be checking them at the next service (7200 [sm=yikesomg.gif]).

RE: first 600 mi. service
Personnaly I feel it's important to check the valves at 600 miles. I cant give you any hard facts on it though, I just feel it's worth the time and effort to do it. 7200 miles Before checking the valves for the Frist Time is way to long imho. Besides when my bike goes down I will be doing everything from all the free mods, to the exhaust and rejetting the card and opening up the airbox. I will also be swapping springs all around and trying to service the swingarm and neck bearings. Am I looking forward to it, Nope. Do I want to do it, Nope. Am I going to be comfortable doing it, Nope. But If I'm going to have the bike that tore down I'm going to try and check the valves too. Just makes sense to do and if nothing else it will give you piece of mind there right. My 2 cents....
