RE: Exhaust Heat Shield Mod
it appears that that header has been painted, it sure isn't new as stated. sure the BG is ceramic coated, but no one ever said that that would make it last forever. everything succumbs to heat sometime. sure the stainless will last longer corrosion wise, but i do not like the color it turns after it heats up. my BG is still as shiny as it was when new. granted it has never been under water or ridden in rain either. if you're trying to jack me up, forget it. won't work. the horse has been beaten so hard even the hyena's would pass it up. the bottom line is still this- the muzzy has fitment problems and i hate the gaudy (IMO) look of the sportbike canister on a dirt bike. the BG fits like a glove, sounds good, and adds more horsepower than the muzzy as dyno readouts posted here verify. but this is all moot when we're talking about 22 or so horsepower.

[8D]Guilty as charged... just ruffling a few feathers... That header doesn't look painted to me though... Dirtsurfer sounds a little too wise for that.

Nope, that is the header pipe as is. No painting on it. I bought it off someone within this forum a couple of months back. They had it on their KLX300 for a few hours before the engine blew.
Judging from the amount of packing blackened, I'd say that was about right...
Dont know howthe headergot that one skid mark on it, kinda looks like someone melted a sneaker on it by accident (another reason the heat sheld is a good idea)
I'm guessing I could clean it, but I haven't graduated yet from Deej's cleaning school, so I'm still pretty lame at acheiving the overall shiny effect.... guesss I've been around dirt bikes too long...[8D][8D]

Here is the stock heat shield on the muzzy head pipe. I only used two clamps and a center spacer. Then used acorn style nuts.

One last mod for this weekend was to put the original heat shield back on the new Big Gun head pipe (keeps the pants burns to a minimum.....)
Using the great advisefound inpast postings on this forum, the first thing I needed to do was to pre-place the circular hose clamps on the header pipe to get the general placement right. I didn't worry too much about the exact placement of the clamps, only in general so that I could gauge how I wanted them to be tightened and look (be hidden) when the job was done.
I wanted to be sure that onceI started drilling them, that the hole where the bolt would go would enable me to tighten them all the way and keep the tightener out of view as much as possible.
To do that accurately, I placed the bolts within and to the side of each clamp while it was on the pipe to get the exact position of where I wanted to drill the hole.
That was, in my opinion, the most important measurement. I then used a sharpi to mark the spot on each clamp nextto the bolts.
Sorry about the pic, the camera was not paying attention to whatI wanted it to focus on...[:@]:
Once I had them marked, I drilled them out and secured the bolts in each.
Each bolt was a quarter inch flat head bolt and was bolted on with split lock washer and a nut. The two on the ends were 1/2 inch long bolts, but the one in the middle was a 3/4 inch bolt and needed two nuts below the heat shield to seat it correctly.
I ended up placing the clamping mechanisms under the head pipe for the front and back clamps, but had to place the clamping mechanism for the middle clamp on top so it would not interfere with the clutch mechanism. I just tilted it way back so that it was barely visible but still able to get clamped down on. (Again, this was measured in advance so that the hole in the clamp was in the correct position).
I put it all together loosely in place, then tightened the circle clamps down, then put the final nuts on over the heat shield (with a bit of loc-tite) and tightened them down.
I really liked the look of the original heat shield so I was glad there were other postings on how to get this back on the replacement header pipe!!
Cheers!!

Iowaguy,
Do you happen to have a pic of your header pip that you can post?? Perhaps the one I bought was before they made the coating your talking about.
Thanks.

That is awesome Iowaguy, I was laughing and someone walked by my office and asked what was so funny. Of course I don't think they would appreciate it. I hope I can borrow that phrase someday. Later man.

dirtsurfer-
i do have pics of my bike, but i really haven't looked into learning how to post pics on this forum hence the reason no one's ever laid eyes on my bike. if you want, i can send pics directly to you. but i can assure you that your pipe has more than a few hours on it, which means nothing unless it leaks because as you stated earlier, you could care what it looks like. it would bother me though on such a new bike. i wonder if anyone's ever tried using the oem header with a BG collector. some say the oem header, after it's been cleared of clumped of weld, makes more low end.
