El Cheapo
First, my apologies to anyone who has thought of this before. Can't claim to have read all of the threads here. And it's not like this is a tech issue, more convenience oriented.
Most of the places I ride off-road have a lot of soft places, everything from soft muck (that would be wet peat to y'all north of the Mason-Dixon Line) to sugar sand. I like to stop frequently for water/snacks/pix and often find myself looking for a solid place to drop the hook. Kind of a pain to always look for a branch or whatever to keep the bike upright.
I remember seeing some threads where folks have modded the kickstand with a larger footprint. My problem with that approach is that I already whack my shins too much on the footpegs - hey, I'm a klutz, sue me - and I don't want another larger piece of metal hanging down from the bottom of the bike.
My solution is to carry a lid from a pickle or similar jar. Gives you about a 3 inch footprint, usually enough to keep you from having to pick up the bike after a Homer Simpson moment -DOH!. It fits in what passes for our tool pouch, and it's free. Works for me, but if anybody has a better idea I'm all ears.

Xerxes, good call on the pickle jar lid. Another option is to head to any of your local bike shows, at almost every show i've been to one of the vendors is handing out kickstand plates, i got a nice flat honda one quite awhile ago that i still use, fits perfectly in the tool pouch as you mentioned.
if i could find a kawi one i'd be even happier!
