Default Eastern NC - Carb work

Looking to jet my 09 KLX250S. Am mechanically inclined, just wondering if there was anyone out there in the Raleigh/Fayetteville/Goldsboro area that wanted to make a few extra bucks helping me out. Preferably someone who owns a KLX250S and has done this before!

Thanks,
Tom

Lookin to jet mine as well. I've done my 650. The 250 has been cantankerous to crank since I bought it in May. I'm debating on doing it myself or taking it back to the dealer because I think something is not quite right. When I bought it, the dealer did the pdi and the carb was running over so they kept it another day. They said the float needle was stuck and I can buy that. But it still seems lacking on power. Maybe I'm expecting too much. I don't have anything to compare it to. It won't even pull a wheelie if you dump the clutch... How is yours on power??

I just came over from the klr650 site because I was looking for more info on the carb and performance of the 250. The 650 site has loads on the 650 but not as much on the 250. Any advice from anyone out there will be greatly appreciated!

Yup and yup.

In stock form the KLX is pretty weak. Pipe, jet, 13 tooth countershaft sprocket will get you a little more, or finish it like Kawi should have and add a big bore.

I hear ya Dan! BUT, it is what it is so I want to get as much as possible out of the basically stock bike. Not gonna mod the exhaust,,, so what is the most jetting and carb work I can do? This is the wife's bike anyway and she just wants it to start and go. That's what got me here in the first place!! I got the 650 and she got the 250 together back in May and we've loved it! The 650 now has the KLX needle 2nd groove, 140 main, 2 turns on the idle and a Uni filter. Looking to do the same for the klx but need advice on the specifics. Is there a generally recommended kit or set up?

I think the HMF site has/had a photo illustrated, step by step tutorial for adjusting the KLX carb, that's the main writeup I used. One thing I wasn't expecting is there are a number of screws (throttle cable bracket, float bowl) that are made from very soft metal and torqued down real tight, that can be hard to extract without rounding out the head.

Dan's right, if your totally out of cash for mods or just want to leave the bike mostly stock, dropping a tooth on the front sprocket is the cheapest thing you can do to get more power.

Just doing a simple jet kit is the best thing you can do for the bike. It isn't that hard to pull the carb and once the carb is out, it literally takes like 10 minutes to jet the carb. There are two kits that work on the bike, the dyno jet 2152 and the 2206. I think they are like $50 through jcmotors. Also, don't forget to remove the fuel mixture plug and back the screw about about 2-1/2 turns.

The KDX snorkel does a lot AFTER re jet. It lets the thing breathe. Do some searching and you will find a lot.

KDX snorkel,
Main jet 128
Pilot jet stock 35 turned out 3 1/4 turns.
Slide Needle and spring from Dynojet kit 2152
Drilled small holes in stock exhaust

All these work together.

Runs MUCH better now.

That's what I needed guys! Thanks! One thing though. Is there a way to order the needle and jet individually? I did that for the 650 and got them for 30 bucks. A kit will be 80 bucks or so buy the time you add shipping.
