With direct lift you have to get the partial-throttle jetting more spot-on and you also need to tune the AP for best throttle response.
CV carbs (like the stock) are very forgiving for incorrect jetting.

We tore everything apart last night. I forgot what a pain the carb was to remove. Everything went smoothly and I am sending the bore to bill Blue today. Does anyone know if the TM34 Mikuni is any easier to install? Also what is the electrical plug on the side of the stock carb for?
