plug tests are supposedly unreliable now. i would try the fuel screw. it's the easiest part of the carb to adjust and there's no sense in pulling the whole carb until you know that that won't fix the popping.

I've done all the Mods and have the Muzzy and still get the popping, mostly while going down hill. I've fooled with EVERYTHING and it still doesnt go away. I've been told its just unburned fuel and isnt a problem...and you actually hear it more with the aftermarket exuast, only because the stocker is so muffled and quiet.

I don't worry bout it no more. Its not like a "KABAAM" type popping backfire, like Uncle Buck's car.

A slight amount of decel pop is acceptable. It is from the pilot circuit. The following is from the jetting expert, Eddie Sisneros on Thumpertalk. This has always worked good for me on both my pumper and CVK carbs. I would remove your smog stuff, do all the free mods, get your exhaust on and then work on the jetting.how to confirm your pilot circuit setting seems like the most common jetting issue that comes up are pilot circuit related.the following is a sure method to choose the needed changes.

with the bike warm and idling turn the fuel screw in till the idle drops/misses.then go back out till the idle peaks/smooths.

this should happen between 1 and 2.5 turns on a fcr carb and 1 and 3 turns on a cv.

if you end up at less than 1 turn you need a smaller pilot jet.more than 2.5 (or 3 turns on a cv) you need a bigger pilot jet.

choose the appropriate size and retest.

Thanks....That was what I was thinking of doing. Getting everything finished...smog crap and my header on... and then playing with the F/S. My new plug was black about half way around...Do I need to get it to be a tan color all the around for optimum efficiency. ie Fuel mileage...Hopefully this summer a clarke tank shows up at my door!! What can brown do for you?!

you dont have to take the carb off either to do that.... just take the tank off and loosen the hose clamps for the intake boots... and spin it a little and then you can get to that part of the carb... just take the 4 screws out and there ya go.... just make sure you get that needle back where it belongs
