Buy a used 250 or 300 two-stroke, that's been set up for the dunes. . . . then you'll have the power AND suspension for riding there. . . . clean the running gear and air filter and change oil often! You can spend a small fortune on your KLX250S, and it will never perform like a "Dunes" bike!

I would avoid the paddle tire on a KLX unless you have a big bore kit. I tried one on mine and it wouldn't pull it in anything higher than third gear. The Pirelli MT 43 has a lot of volume and stays up on the sand pretty well without lugging the motor down.

But the sand looks wetter and fimer than dunes I'm used to riding.

A stock KLX ain't much fun in really soft sand IMO.

Looks like a good fun place to cut loose.

True dat .... stock klx sucks in sugar, big time. 351 helps.....but shoot my ktm adv is just waaaaaay fun in open soft sand.

btw that sand looks real firm. .. sayin.

The sand was wet for sure. This was the first dry day we'd had in about a week. It was soft enough that I had to make sure I was pointing downhill on the XR before I stopped or I would just dig in. I'm sure it helped for traction, but it also left the the access trails and more popular areas all chewed up and rutty which was a challenge in itself.

I did ride some dry dunes once on my YZ80 at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Utah back in about '79, all I remember is my bike got really hot and I was plowing all over the place. But that was so long ago, I still don't really even know what it's like to ride in regular dry sand. It's gonna be a while before we have any of that out here. I wonder if would have gotten up any of the hills without a paddle on that XR in dry sand?
