Default Dam, there's a problem and my warrenty is almost gone

Hi

What's up guys, Been a Looong Time since I was last on here. Well I got a problem with my klx and I think it's gonna have to go to the dealer. Sucks man. Sucks because my warrenty is almost gone and because I've done the standard upgrades so they will probably try to tell me the warrenty is voided because of the upgrades.

Anyway I noticed a few weeks ago the bike wasnt right quite right. Nothing I could put my finger on but something was off. I continued to ride figuring it needed a plug or something and I would get to it asap. Well it's more then that.

It's at the point now where it doesnt want to stay running unless I have the choke on or have the idle twisted up. It sounds like there is a some sort of leak someplace because I can hear a kind of pulsating hissing coming from the front of the motor. Also I notice it takes a second or two for the engine to slow down once I push in the choke or twist the throttle. I have also smelled a burning smell coming from the front of the motor. Dont have a clue whats going on.

I have added a aftermarket exhaust, rejeted the carb, opened the airbox and removed the smog stuff. I did all this months ago and the bike has run fine up untill the past few weeks. I thought it was something simply like the exhaust pipe being loose or a cracked vacum plug but so far everything I looked at isgood. The more I mess with it the more I think the problem is Internal.

Any of you klx gurus got any ideas. I'm open to suggestions. I bought the bike last July so I'm right at the end of the warrenty and I Just Know when I take it to kawi they will probably tell me the warranty is no good becuase of the mods I have done. At this point I dont want to mess with it to much more because if it is internal by running it trying to figure it out I might be doing my damage then good.

Hey LV good to hear from you, sorry about the bike. But you know if you have a good dealer like I do, they said that no mods will void the warranty, I guess as far as they are concerned. Feel them out, ask them if the aftermarket stuff will void warranty work, so far my shop has changed the camshaft and the cam chain tensioner, and didn't even make me sign any paperwork. And besides, they only make money on warranty work, they usually don't turn it down. I did the exact same mods you did, and in fact the bike shop did all of my work, so if you think about it they are accomplices and have to take care of me. But seriously I have heard that you can do some stuff and have it not void any warranty, stuff like regular maintenance, but I think I read somewhere that you can customize things and still be covered.

Now about the bike. When I read that it wouldn't run without the choke on, my first thought was that you have a plugged jet. I would start there. If you do have a plugged jet and are running it with the choke on, its going to run rich and perhaps that's the smell. Of course I am no expert on bikes, but I would start with getting the jets out and making sure they are clean, which begs the question, why don't they put a better fuel filter on these bikes, I think that's the next small but important mod I am going to do. Good luck, and definitely keep us posted. Also you might look into extending the warranty before you take the bike back in. Later man.

Hey Deej, long time man

I actually just fixed it

After I wrote the postI went to look again. Upon futher inspection I discovered a vacum cap on the carb was bad. Had a big ole crack in it. I just smiled when I say it. It was the vacum connection on the carb right before the rubber intake. It just fell off when I went to get it. Stuck a new one on and fired it up. Just like always, ran great. I'm a happy camper, Man I was dreading taking it to the Steeler.

Hope everybody is doing good and a wave to all the Old Timers out there
I will be stoping in more often. Sold the harley and thinking about that big bore upgrade more and more. Take care...

Don't you love it when you fix something yourself and it was easy? Cool I'm glad you figured it out. I had something similar yesterday with my truck.

I was busy replacing my front brake pads on the Dodge 2500 4X4. The job went pretty well, except they sold me pads for the 3/4 ton and needed the ones for the one ton. That's weird, but when I went to install the ones for the 3/4 ton the rivets hit the piston, well after the parts store figured that out, I got everything back together and while I had the wheels off I decided to polish the aluminum with mothers polish and then I did the bumpers and used the back to black on all the plastics, it looks like a brand new truck. Oh and I had to wash the truck of course.Well after finishing that (using the shop at work) I headed home which is only 2 miles and when I got home of course I had to rinse off the truck because the wheels stick out 3 inches past the fenders and the roads are wet, only to discover that the drivers side brake was really hot as in steam came pouring off when I rinsed the wheels. So I figured the caliper was hanging up so I called the parts store and took the car down to get one, and was surprised that it was only $40.00. Took the car down and picked up one, then drove the truck back to work since the impact gun and jack and nice shop floor are there. Anyway when I pulled the wheel off I quickly realized what I had done to cause this. When I change front disc pads I sometimes rotate the caliper to get a better angle at it in order to compress the piston back in and when I re-installed it I had twisted the hose once and so when breaking it wouldn't let the fluid slightly bleed back and so kept pressure on the pads, well everything is back together, and I'm beat. I don't even work that hard .......at work!!! Deej out. Oh and its 10:35 and I just had 3 cups of coffee, so if this post seems like I have ADD or whatever the acronym is this month well maybe I do, or hopefully its the coffee typing.[8D]

Deej, I don't think it should count on your post count when you just copy and paste paragraphs from one post to another.[sm=bustedsign.gif]

G'day your lordship nice to hear from you, you should call in from time to time. As soon as I read your post I thought it's one of those plugs, I think it was BMWHD that had one go bad on him. Anyway glad you worked it out.
Cheers

I just have to ask. Was this plug there from the factory? Even though they really should try to prove a directcause, I can see how a dealer would simply conclude "intake and exhaust modifications" = no warranty on performance problems.

At least you didn't wait a week toget into a schedule to have them chargeyou a$50to $90 fee to diagnose and fix it.

Hi

I thought it was something like that to but upon 1st inspection I didnt see it and what I did check was fine. Only after I wrote the above post and I went and pulled the seat and shrowds did I see it. Thanks....
