Cross Timber Trails
Well, this would be the first time I took the KLX on some serious trail riding. Cross Timber Trails located by Stanley Draper Lake and manitaned by OCCRA. Had to pay $60 for an annual permit, but its better than a $200 ticket for not having one. And its good until April 30, 2008. For today, I rode 10miles of constant beating of sand, dirt, rock, hill, hairpin turns and ditches. The sand part is the ture b*tch of all terrain. Can't keep it straight no matter what and its best to just power through it. The rest was more of a test of endurance and strenght. There were a few times where I almost fell over or hit a tree. One part, ina blind s-corner with sand, I took the wrong track and off flying I went. Luckily nothing broke, I got that kill-switch engaged before falling off. A little red dirt and a screwed up left mirror, but thats it. For most of the trail ride I doing about 25mph in 2nd, stopping plenty in turns and power sliding out of them. Only a few time where I could hit 3rd gear and let the engine scream out.
Tomorrow morning, I'll be back riding the rest of the trails. I've only ridden 1/3 of them and planning on going back to re-learn the current one that I took today. As for what people were riding there. Mostly KTM's, some Kawasaki's, and a few Yahama's. The KTM's were the only big bore group there, everything else was in the 250cc or less. But I was the only guy to ride in on a Dual-Sport and hit the trails and then take-off back home on the same bike. The KLX250s certainly turned a few heads, and probably left a quite a few people thinking what the hell was I doing there.

RE: Cross Timber Trails
Its been a true blast today. My body is aching and my butt is sore. Can't get any better. Got stuck twice, first one was a gaint bike pit that just engulfed me and the KLX. Pretty much the only thing sticking out of the pit was my head. But with a few tries and throttling the hell out of the engine. I managed to get out. The second place was a hill dip that was truley gutted out from every biker going up it. And down the center was a gaint rut that could bury any bike. I tried going up the left side but the rear slide in and I stuck in a mud rut. Took me 20minutes just to get free. And 5minutes just after I get and resting on the top, a family of bikers come along. They sent the mother first, and as fate would have it, she got stuck as well. The other 3 made it by taking a detour around the pit.
Overall, I'm done for the day. I've had fun. Wished I had a camera to better share the trail (need a camera phone). But I will post a few after shots.

Last pic is of the other side of the KLX. And I just cleaned that damn chain yesterday too. Also since I didn't say this in the first post. Total miles today driven was 20miles, took 3.5hrs, at an average speed of 7mph. Plus I need to look for new hand guards. I broke the left one today. So I'll be looking for something better protecting but also blocks the wind like the stock ones do.

RE: Cross Timber Trails
Very cool. Thnaks for the write up and pictures! You're only about two hours North of me. We'll have to ride there together sometime. I'll bring Vurtle with me too. (another KLX owner on this board and here in WF.)
Have you been to Red River in Bulcher,Texas? It's not that far from you and they have some the most killer trails in the country. It's where they have the Red Bull Last man Standing races.

RE: Cross Timber Trails
I have heard the Red River section is fun. Talked to another guy that has KLR650 thats been down there. Hey, if its free trail riding, me like's. I don't think I'll pay another $60 annual permit for the Cross Timbers Trails. Its just too brutal and body joint aching. I like good trails that are wide enough that I don't have toworry about hitting a tree.
Looks like you guys went trough deeper mud than I did. And gotta love those 3 foot mud ruts. Thats how I got stuck at the bottom between two hills.
