Very good point!!!

If anyone is interested here are a couple of short articles:
Solar storm of 1859 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
March 1989 geomagnetic storm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Great articles but if it ever happens again I bet Al Gore will say it's because of man-made climate change.

Yeah and there's now proof (which the greenies will ignore) that there's been no global warming for the past 17 years.

But to stay on topic (somewhat)... I've wanted to build a directed EMP device for years. Something that would fit in a car or truck and could be aimed foreward (or behind) and send out a very focused EMP pulse just enough to knock out another vehicle directly ahead or behind you, but not your own. It's probably not at all realistic, but it's fun to think about.

I really wouldn't worry about natural EMP killing a KLX unless you had it plugged into the grid somehow. the 1859 storm caused telegraph disruptions because the telegraph lines are like the modern power grid and would act like a giant inducer causing the EMP to build up and travel through it. As I said above the KLX has a much smaller antenna in the frame and metal structure than thousands of miles telegraph or power lines.

Your leaf or Tesla might be fried if it was plugged in and charging but I doubt the KLX would be affected.

Theres about a thousand other things I would be worried about in a massive solar EMP knocking the grid out IMO.

OK, several of you have mentioned the CDI as a potential casualty of a EMP. Just to clarify, would the bike still run with a dead instrument panel?

I have a few EMP bags in which I keep a handheld GPS, emergency radio, old iPhone, backup hard drive and a few other electronics. So it would be easy enough to buy a CDI and throw it in one.

If the power grid goes down for any length of time there's going to be a total break down of society and I want to be able to use the bike to evacuate to our bugout location.

If a EMP takes out the CDI on the bike, it will take out the handheld GPS, emergency radio, old iPhone, backup hard drive and a few other electronics in the bag normally. You should put them in a farraday cage, that should help. I doubt if the GPS will have any satellites to communicate with, all the cell towers will be down, so the iphone will not work, etc. You need to think this through a little more. All the infrastructure will be out! I have walkie talkies AM/FM type would still work.

Also they are researching the construction of EMP devices that will disable cars, they are here. But I doubt you will want to keep on in your trunk. I don't think they have the technology to direct the EMP, so your car will be out also. I would imagine the device would wiegh several thousand pounds and require a large power source or huge capacitor. I think the military is on this for embassy protection. Your tax dollars at work!

Trust me, I know what I'm doing. Don't just assume I don't because you don't understand it. Do you not think I know cell towers would be down? Come on man! Let's stick to the question at hand.

Maday maday shots fired! I think he was saying if the emp managed to take out the cdi (assuming it will) any electric device in your possession will be useless so it would be pointless to carry a spare since that would be fried too.

Well enlighten me, if the cell towers & GPS satellites are down, what are you going to use the iphone & GPS for? Hold your papers down?
