Default coolant elbow leaking oil

My friends bike has an oil leak at wich looks like the coolant elbo at the front of the head. Is this a new o-ring, clean surfaces & proper torque job or do we need to apply some sort of permatex of liquid gasket. Thanks for the help guys.

First, are you sure that's oil? If I'm looking at the elbow you're referring to in the parts diagram, isn't that coolant only? If it's oil, maybe it's coming from above, and because of airflow effects it looks like it's coming from that elbow? Then again, it could be coolant that because of exposure to dirt and other particles outside the engine, the residue could look like oil.

O-ring components like that one don't usually recommend a sealant. Maybe put a thin film of grease on the o-ring during istallation and that's about it.

im with tnc. if you have oil and coolant mixing, you got worse problems then a leak. probably a small amount of coolant that has picked up some dirt.

With him on this diagnosis.... There is no way thats oil unless there is oil in the coolant.

Just fabricate some metal shield to install under the hose to obscure the viewing of that mess.

Default It was the valve cover gasket

Thanks for throwing the post up illking. I wiped the engine down good and took the bike over to our buddies shop. He told me lets start with the easiest fix , the valve cover gasket, before we tear the engine apart. Hallelujah it stopped leaking after we replaced it.

I couldn't find any threads with what to put on the gasket: grease or glue?

I will check with my buddy on what he used. It seems to have done the trick.

I checked with our buddy. He used The Right Stuff gasket glue on the head side to seal up the half circles nicely. On the valve cover side he used grease. Its working great now. Dry as a bone on the outside. Hope this helps someone.
