I found that sliding back on the seat helps me through muddy ruts. Pull up on the front and gun it and put your feet down as needed. Even the best riders don't stay up on the footpegs through muddy ruts. Also, We are riding on DOT tires which are not near as good as an all out Knobbie made for dirt. I think the biggest thing is keeping the weight off the front as much as possible.
