Whilst doing my annual full tear down and lube, I was surprised and concerned to find that the plastic chain guard that wraps around the swing arm had broken.

I don't know how long its been broken but its allowed the chain to rub into the swing arm.
The gouges are quite deep.

I don't know whether to be angry that I didn't notice it earlier or be grateful that I caught it before it had worn through to the bearing and ruining the swing arm.

Maybe it happened on the last ride and so there isn't much I could do about it.

Ouch!!! your going to have to keep an eye on that spot. You could have it welded, but I think you've still got enough material there to be safe.

You know I bet they wouldn't charge much to lay a couple beads in there. For the peace of mind it would probably be worth the small amount of $ they might charge.

Yikes! That wouldn't take long to do some serious damage. I'm heading out to the garage to check it out.

I'm back. Looks good, but I'll keep an eye on it from now on. Thanks for the warning!

I'm not sure if I've ever checked those guides at the front up there Been lucky obviously. Bummer ...

Fill-welding would be the best fix ... but you'd have to remove bearings/seals prior. It's a quick weld job but enough heat could be generated to bugger those things up.

You might consider smoothing out the damage with a fine tool round file then finish up with some fine grit sandpaper - that will help deter stress cracks from forming.

What I'll do is use that liquid steel stuff.
Fill it and smooth it out and see how I go.

I hear good things about this stuff but I haven't used it myself.

I was just about to say try JB weld or something to fill it back in. To me it looks like you still have enuf material there to support the bearings...I still have my bike apart doing the same thing (greasing the bearings). My friends DRZ is also in the garage for same. After lifting his swingarm to move it, I am wondering if there is an aluminum swingarm out there that will fit our KLXs?

Mudjunkie the klx swing arm is aluminium, I'm probably misunderstanding your question though.
