Default carb rebuild

looking for some input, just installed a carb kit on my 06 klx250s. put a small shim on the needle, 122 main jet, 42 pilot jet, drilled out the cap and set the mixture screw at 2 1/2 turns. bike fired right up (had the typical cold start issue before) and idled great. I let it warm up and went down the road, the only problem is it wont rev above about 8K now?? even sitting in neutral it will act like it has a rev limiter and just sit a bit above 8K at full throttle? I didnt put the air cleaner lid back on yet but was running with it off before with the carb stock and had no problem. any input??

Thanks
Chris

What else have you done? Stock exhaust and airbox?
Who's jets did you put in? Kawis?
More info, please.
A 42 pilot seems VERY rich on that end. It may start nice, but that's still big IMO. I changed the stock 35 to 38, then put the 35 back in (also drilled the enrichment, which fixes the starting problem) and the 35 is the right one for my elevation (2,500 ft +).
The stock needle sux. Even with a shim, from what I hear. Recommend dynojet's needle from the #2206 kit, or maybe the N1TC.
You may be running too rich. Especially if it hit the rev limiter with the previous settings.

When I did that, the first time I did not get the diaphragm in right and the slide did not operate properly. I would check that first. I also ran with the stock pilot jet between 2.5 and 3 turns. Pilot jet should have NOTHING to do with your problem at the other end of the scale.

Thanks guys, the diaghram was giving me fits. I quess I shouldnt have said rev-limiter. its acting more like a limiter on a go-cart motor, it just sits around 8000 and wont rev any higher. if the diaghram is leaking or twisted then it wont let the needle go any higher. I will check that 1st thing

Th diaphragm can swell when out of the bike. Immediately put it into HOT water, then dry it off and put it back in and it should fit better.

I didn't do the hot water thing. Most sources didn't tell you to do this and you don't need to. What I did do to aid in reseating that diaphragm was to shove a block in the carb throat to lift the slide up a bit. This allows the diaphragm to "boob out" for an easier fit to the carb body.

I don't know why you swapped pilot jets. You don't need to. The pilot jet is still puking fuel during the entire RPM range but the main jet system is much more likely to cause your top end issue.

Check your booby rubber.

thanks for all the input guys. I took the top off the carb, couldnt see anything obvious but I pulled it out, put some teflon on the slider blades of the diaghram, set the seal with some vaseline and put the top back on. That must have been the problem cause she revs to the moon now with no problem. I can already see the difference in cold start and full throttle snaps. Now if the rain would go away I could go play!

Well send some of that rain down to Texas...LOL! Lots of dry stuff on fire down here.

Harbone...man, you're running an extremely rich pilot jet. In warm temps and/or higher elevation that thing is going to be really rich.

I will keep an eye on it, elevation isnt an issue where I live, about 900 feet at the most. It was in the kit I bought so I figured just install everything per the instructions. I know how to take the carb off now, looked a little scary at first but I was really surprised at how easy it was. Last carb I did on an import enduro was a 79 XR200. I could swap jets on it in my sleep!
