Carb Breather Mod Question
A few weeks ago I got stranded in the middle of a large puddle. A few folks recommended I do the carb breather mod to help eliminate the problem of stalling when the carb breather tubes get submerged.
Today I went out, started up my bike and pinched off the breather tubes. My bike did not stall. I revved the engine and having the tubes pinched off did not affect the way the bike ran in the least.
My question: Why wouldn't my engine stall when I pinch off the tubes? If the water was the problem, why can't I duplicate it in my garage?

If you place the tubes into a cup of water you can see the water try to run up the tube. Thats what I did to prove to myself It needed to be done.

Submerge both hoses in a cup of water and you will stall..it doesn't always happen right away, but the carb bowl and diaphram get air from those vent tubes. Worked when I tried it. Also make sure they are hooked-up at the carb.
Are you sure weren't pinching the vents from the gas tank? The carb vent hoses for the 06/07 are pink colored...not sure about the 09.

Tremor is right ..... you be pintching the wrong tubes.....you don't want to make that mistake with your girls...sayin.

No, I was pinching the right tubes. I don't even have the gas tank vent tubes installed anymore.

Not wise. I've had fuel spew out of those vents while the bike was horizontal after a "bush nap." Good chance the fuel can run on to the hot engine/header without the overflow/vent. FIRE! Not good.

Army did you ever duplicate this? I'm searching for a carb "T-mod" how to thread, and ran across this. My big question is, if these tubes are sucking air (even a little) into the carb why would they be hanging, wide open, in the filthiest spot on the bike?

I don't think they suck air in like constantly.
More they allow air to move within the carb as required.
I'm not 100% sure though but thats my understanding.
Either way, the t-mod works to stop stalling in water.

I lost the tank vent tubes day one, carb vent tubes will cause the stall....ya know the ones that leak gas when she takes a nap
