Default Break In Period

Ok so i'm trying to follow the recomendation from kawi. This seems to be overkill. It's going to take forever to reach 1000 miles and be able to rev the motor and have some power. What's the consensus of the group? Has everyone followed this break in period to the letter? Any guidance would be most kind.

I cain't speak for everone here but I took their advice and rode the bike like I would on a day to day trip. I didnt stay in one gear to long or stay at the same speed for a long period. However, I took the thing off road and ripped the hell out of it. Changed the oil at about 250miles and filter then again at 500 miles. Have not had a problem with it.

Now someone with the more mechanical terms will give you a better answer than that but.. all in a nut shell the book version stinks and its not to be followed.

Ohh yeah.. take a good look at your new bike and keep a mental picture of it.... cause it will never be as shinny and clean as it is right now... trust me...

I agree with you. I have had my bike for about 3 weeks and have only managed to put 35 miles on it because weather, time constraints, etc. At this rate I will reach 1000 miles sometime next year!! Maybe there is hope since spring and summer weather are fast approaching.

Guys, read the link Tony posted. Don't worry about the nonsense Kawi recommends. Ride it like you stole it.

What Tony and Todd said, luckily I found the article before I had ridden mine, it sounds like that's the window of opportunity.

I second that! Lawyers write the break-in rules. This might have been true on a engine 40 years ago where parts were intentionally madew too tight fitting to get them to properly seat. Modern manufacturing and metalurgy have resulted in engine parts that a very precise, consistent and made the the correct specification without relying on inital wear ot make them fit tightly. Make sense?

Ride the PI** out of it. Just try to avoid riding at a constant speed for the first 500 miles. Try to be constantly accelerating or deaccelerating. Then change the oil after 500 miles or some recommend earlier since after 50-100 miles all of the initial wear is done.
