Default Break in period 2009 KLX-205S

The owner's manual says break-in period is below 4000rpm in first 600 miles. And Below 6000 rpm for first 1000 miles. Seems very hard to achieve in a few days, consider I have a off-road group ride coming up next week. 4000rpm in 6th gear is only 40mph! More riding today, maybe able to ride 600 miles and do a oil change before the big trip.

Take it easy the first 20-40 miles, then drive it like you stole it.

I ignored the break in period on mine, just made sure I varied the RPM on long stretches.

forget the 4k limit. i rode mine away from the dealership and directly onto a fun winding road out to a lake. I let it rip- not to redline but I ran it up and down through the rpms to seat the rings. Changed oil and filter at 100 miles then again at 500. Bike runs awesome.

I redlined mine all the time until I reached 1000miles and my bike runs stronger than ever!

Just playing! Do not redline your bike, don't snap your throttle, vary your rpms, change your oil at 100 miles and at 600 miles, get on the gas hard when building up your speed(just don't snap your throttle and don't redline it) and have fun!

Back in the day (good old 70's) There was no such thing as break-in. Too bad your bike isn't at zero miles, then I would suggest the Mototune method. That's what a lot of the guys do. Change oil at 40 and then 100 then every 1000 till 5000 then every 3,000. But as mentioned above just vary the rpm's. Your motor doesn't know what you are doing and it certainly won't tell on you.

Plan to have oil change before the trip even if it is not 600 miles yet.

All of the above. Simple - just don't cane it for too long and regular oil changes.
Don't forget to check air filter regularly either. A lot of guys get hung up on oil and forget to check/clean/re-oil filter.

You should take some time to check out that all the screws, bolts and cables are still tight before you head out. These bikes have been known to have loose bolts and whatnot. Also you might consider lubing up your shock linkage and swingarm bearings. The factory isn't exactly liberal with the grease. It's real easy to do and takes about 45 minutes or so. The linkage bolts tourque is 60 ft .lbs and the swingarm bolt tourque is 70 ft.lbs. The rear axle bolt I torque to 70 ft.lbs. I forget the exact torque so I just go with 70.
