RE: Break-In Help for new member
Hi Mike! My opinion is that both the Mototune and the Kawasaki recommended method are a little harsh for this motor. Just go out and have fun. Don't "lug" the motor or try to "get it to redline" for the first 400-500 miles and it will be fine. I can't recommend getting out into traffic while you're breaking it in, as the constant slowing down and speeding up will make the other drivers crazy. I did the "just vary the rpms" method on mine, and when I pulled the cylinder/piston to upgrade to the 300 I found that it looked brand new. I did change the oil twice in the first 100 miles, and converted to full synthetic somewhere around the first 400-500 miles.

G'day Mike! Like most of the boys here have said change the oil very early on (20 miles) and oil filter. I changed my oil 4 times before the 600 mile mark. If you keep your rev's between 4000 and 6000 rpm's and nothing more everything will be fine. Because the bike is very restricted it's very hard to over rev the engine anyway. Find a nice winding road where you can go up and down the gear range and get a feel for the bike. A good first mod after your first Kawai service is to remove the air box snorkel. This will help the engine breathe alot better. I use my KLX every day to and from work and have done nearly 4000kms in 3 months. The engine started to feel right after about 2000kms of soft riding. Now after the bike is fully warmed up I ride it like I stole it pretty much everywhere. Just keep changing that oil and oil filter frequently and clean your airbox filter often and the bike will last longer then you.
Cheers!

Thanks for the replies folks.
I guess at this point I'll just ride the bike the way I need to and not hit it hard. I'll change the oil often and just let the chips fall where they may. I can't wait to be able open this thing up. It's hard to wait... I'm so used to hitting my KDX 200 hard.

What I did was ride hard for 15minutes, up and down the rev range etc, not any constant speed, a motocross track is good for this if you can find one, let the engine cool, do it two more times each time letting it cool. And that was it, ridden it hard ever since and never had a problem, I was told this by a Yamaha team mechanic and that is how they break their bikes in.. I think with the amount of technology these days, unless you have a manufacturing fault with the engine it is really hard to stuff an engine while so called "breaking in". Anyway thats what worked for me and it sure beats doing 1000k's while trying to keep the RPM below 4000 (also did an oil and filter change after doing this)
