Default Break-In Help for new member

Hello All

I'm new here and just picked up 2007 KLX 250S. Kawi says to keep the bike under 4000rmp's for the first 500 miles. This seems insane to me as I'll get run over by everybody on the road. I've done research here and elsewhere and it seems that there aremany very different schools of thought on bike break-in. Some hit the bike hard initially and others follow the book.

I still have under 20 miles on the bike and hoped to get some opinions. How did you all break your bike in?

Thanks
Mike

general rule of thumb is to vary the rpm up and down enough - don't sit at a steady higher rpm on the road. and get enough engine breaking in to help seat the piston rings. after the first oil change don't have to worry as much.

I tried to follow Kawasaki recommended procedure but found it nearly impossible to adhere to some of the time as you mentioned.
What I wound up doing was just baby the engine as much as possible, I also changed the oil at 20 miles on the odo and again at 50 miles and once more at 100 miles, then I changed the oil every 250 miles roughly till I had 1,000 showing, then I switched to synthetic oil and beat the hell out of it ever since, I have 5,000+ miles and no trouble.

Hey Mike, welcome to perhaps the best forum for the KLX 250 out there. As far as the break in, I used the mototune method, but you have to do it with a brand new bike in the first 20 miles. However really the way people have been breaking motors for 30 years will work fine too. Best of luck man, and again welcome.

Be happy you're puting on miles. Mind in storage wiating for a winter full of snow to go away.
I did the low speed riding, all the back roads I could fine. Only take a couple of weekend. Once I had it broken in I geared and open up the exhaust and intake. I've just installed a pumper carb. I've not fine tune yet but I've in out in the snow. Not a save Idea with street tires. lol

Welcome Mike, You are past the window of opportunity to do the Mototune Break-in. I followed the manual to a T and have had no problems. I am also using Synthetic oil(Amsoil.) I left the break in oil in as per the manual but put Synthetic in at the first oil change. If you can't keep it below 4k then a least keep the rpm's varied.
