???????? HUH!? Are you talking about the Kawasaki KLX250S ?

14T first gear is WAAAAY to high. When your on super tight technical stuff its almost impossible to ride with. For me personally, on my bike, I can't ride it any slower than 10MPH with the 14T on and keep the engine at a good power producing RPM. Below that and the chugging starts. 10MPH is pretty damn faster when you got trees and rocks coming at you in every direction.

I'm confused. 10mph sounds about the time I start needing to shift into 2nd. Which sucks because a lot of times teh speed I want is sort of a spot in between 1st and 2nd. 2nd is too low, and lugs the motor. 1st seems way too high and I'm jerking back and forth, unable to maintain smooth power.

Ride a ktm 450 exc for example.....that 1st is way higher than our bike as are most other smokers I have ridden.

When I tried the 13 tooth I hardly used first....it was like a granny gear.....but like JE said....I was switching between first and second all the time trying to stay in the sweet spot

Agreed 13t is perfect for me in 1st gear

Perfect........

I can barely clutch it and stay level at a stop light til it turns green.....Ok well maybe hold it 10 extra seconds....

And with the choke on full in the very early morning start up I can bang first and its almost like a false neutral...Almost maxed out but no chug on the drive train...Gets me to my second block before I turn the choke off.

Not good on the xpressway....66 mph posted speed is about the most oked....After that the Rpmz are a bit high....

But heck winters coming and speeds should be down and gearing should be king...

13t all the way

weird.... I'm not sure what to say.

I mean, my speedometer might be off. But I've done "extensive" (lol) testing on the speeds and stuff in the woods with the 14T and thats what it said. However, I ride in some pretty freakin tight stuff. I mean as tight as tight and techincal can get. Like you almost need a trials bike. But at the same time, I also think its too high even for street use. Even pulling out on the road it seems like it wants to chug and the chain slaps because its just too tall of gearing. The 13T remedies the problem right away. The 12T takes me down to about 5MPH and the 13 is about 7-8MPH.

I just thought about my sprockets, actually I'm running a 14:45 combo which is the same as a 13:42...so I guess I'm using that setup, my previous setup was a 14:49 and I did not like that setup on our lil bike. I like my 14:45 setup so the standard 13 front is a good compromise......I forgot I had a 49 on the back previously, my mistake.

You also have to consider the tire diameters.
I wore the rear tire out at 1320 miles and installed Dunlop D606's front and rear.
The rear Dunlop had about 1.75" more diameter than the stock D603.
With 14/42 sprockets (3.0 ratio) and the stock D603 tire the 6th gear ration is .904
With 13/42 sprockets (3.23077 ratio) and the new D606 tire the 6th gear ration is still .904 because there is an increase in the tire diameter.

So if you're using larger diameter tires and want a low final gear ratio you'll have to either go to a 12 tooth front or larger (maybe 45 tooth rear).
The D606 had deep lugs so the ratio will change as the tire wears down.

I run a 13/51 setup and love it. . . . it's all in WHAT AND HOW YOU RIDE. Can't beat this setup for the tight and twisties and I only ride a short distance to the trails. That's my 2 cents worth. . . .

that hill was spanked in 2nd gear... 46t rear (a tad lower than what a 13t front would be). thats with a BG, K&N, no airbox lid, and a rejet.
