I would love to commute with my bike, I just need another set of wheels so I can put some street orientated tires on one set of wheels and dirt tires on the other set. Would take less than 15 minutes to swap out wheels. If they are the same ones I have now that is.................

I am on my third season on my KLX250S, and I have 13,000 on the ODO. I use it strictly for on-road riding. My commute is about 26 miles round trip, mostly on 35-45 mph roads, but there is a stretch for 2 miles on the freeway. I replaced the tool bag on the back with a fishing lure bag so I can put my lunch and other items in there. I did replace the tires late last year with 70-30 Shinko tires. My mileage did not change much with the new tires. I get between 80-90 mpg regularly. This is a great commuting bike!!

Nice mileage. Sounds about like my commuting. What part of the Detroit area are you in?

Wow, quite a range of results here. I'm chasing higher MPG out of my KLX. Mostly to increase the fuel range, but also because it really bugs me that this 250 gets about the same mileage as my KLR650. That just doesn't seem right! Anyway, I've tried a number of different intage and jetting setups from completely stock to no airbox lid to KDX snorkel with different Dynojet setups. I'm now at a DJ116 main and stock stock snorkel and lid. I've done as well as 60mpg for a road-only ride and typically get 50-55mpg for dual sport rides. I've got a DJ114 main jet on the way. I'm hoping that increases the mileage a bit, as well as taking care of the slight bog at WOT.

Oh, and don't calculate your MPG by the odometer. It's not accurate. My figures are from a GPS.

@stephenmarklay - I live in the Dearborn area. Are you familiar with it?

@cjbiker - Using GPS numbers, my mileage is a little less because of the error in the ODO / SPEEDO calibration. Last tank, I got 140 GPS miles and then filled up with about 1.7 gallons. 140 / 1.7 = 82.4 MPG. No mods to this bike except Shinko 70-30 tires to replace the stock ones that wore out. Oops, my bad. Heated hand grips for those chilly Michigan mornings. Best $40 I ever spent....

Dearborn -yep! I grew up in Clarkston. My dad and mom are are still in MI. Mom's in Grosse Point (no clew why) and my dad is up north.

I moved away a long time ago.

I need to get a GPS to tally my MPG. Riding, with a lot of throttle and 10% Ethanol crap gas I did between 60-69 from 0-10% odo error in the calc.

If I had better gas and did not twist so hard I bet I would be in the low 70's.

do a daily 55-mile commute...last few days, i wanted to get an accurate mpg....filled up the gas tank to the brim....gps to calculate exact miles...filled up the gas tank to the brim to see how much goes in....

gps indicates highest speed of 87 mph (probably passing a big bus, truck or van). average speed of 62 mph. it's very fast and free flowing for the most part, but there are patches of traffic, lane splitting.

57.1 miles exact and 0.883 gallon of 91 octane premium gasoline. 64.666 mpg

Seems like that is pretty much the KLX. I would love to be easy with smooth gear changes, keeping it under 4k to shift. But that just does not seem likely
