Do any of you people use body armour when trail riding?

I have never used it before but 2 recent falls have made me consider the option.
The jacket I use is just way too hot to use off road.
I'm slightly concerned about going trail riding looking like a Ninja Turtle.

I know a few guys who would not ride without some sort of protection under a light jersey.
Cool and safe in their opinion.
Of course my dealer is saying they are a must but he is hardly unbiased.

I'm interested as to who uses what and why for protection.

And don't restrict your comments to body armour.

I got one of these:

I searched around for a while for something that I though would have decent shoulder / collar bone protection

I haven't had a chance to ride with it yet, but it seems comfortable enough. I don't care if I look like a storm trooper, better to ride geared up than to get injured and not ride at all.

I'm with Nobrakes on the safety first issue -- comfort is next, and looks are third (specially when mud comes into play ).

I've got a SixSixOne Pressure Suit that goes under my jersey. It's pretty comfortable, but doesn't offer the same roost/rock protection as a full blown chest protector. As far as Ninja Turtles go, it has segmented spine protection plates in the back, and a built-in kidney belt, which helps keep everything in place (outside & inside). The collar protection is lacking a bit, though. (This became a bit more of a concern after I saw Brian's X-ray. His TLD chest protector looks pretty decent in that regard.)

Next thing on my list is knee/shin guards. Anybody have any suggestions?

I'm seriously thinking of upgrading my current mesh jacket to this for off road usage!

Hey, as we get older, we heal slower but break easier!

I plan on riding for many years to come. Might have to have a way of carrying my walker for when I get off the bike though!

Its an EVS "Ballistic Jacket". I don't know which model, but they have "ballistic jersey" models, also. I think they're pretty highly rated.

Marty, that's a nice jacket....

Here's a link to some knee/shin gaurds... http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1...8007-001-042_G ......For $11.00 a cheap investment.

http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1..._6414-10-530_G ....another knee/shin gaurd, but high dollar

I know what you mean "ninja turtle" ......lol lol..... Almost every piece of gear I have, is under garments. They hide very well under my regular clothing, but do the job of protection.

http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1...m=PAR_27010179 An upper torso protectant vest.

http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1...MXN_6050-CL-OS another torso protector

Thanks everyone.

Job done.

Just bought this http://www.sixsixone.com/Catalog_661...4-695264f46ec7
and a new bigger jersey to go over the top.

Now I almost have the lot.

Funny thing is this.
When I was young and (relatively) stupid, and therefore much more likely to get hurt, I only wore boots, kidney belt, gloves and a helmet.
Now I'm old and (relatively) sensible I have the lot. mmmmmmmmmmm

It reminds me of the story of the old bull and the young bull.
The young bull says to the old bull "why don't we run down to the field and have our wicked way with a few of those cows"
The old bull says "why don't we walk down and take them all"

Cheers
