Bike blubbers at low rpm

I'll just throw another question out there... Exactly how hot are you talking?
Many people report seeing the head pipe "cherry red" when riding at night (can't really see it in daylight). I know in the summer (high 90's) mine gets too hot to ride comfortably in shorts... feels something like having my leg 2" from the side of my BBQ.
I don't have the blubber thing going on (well, if you see me at the beach, you might think so... ), and mine runs equally fine in 30 degrees or 100 degrees.
So, the heat issue might be "normal" for our particular bikes, and the blubbering may not be related at all. ???
