i'm assuming you still have the stock exhaust. here's what i'd do with $750. buy a slip-on muffler for around $200. then, buy the needed jets and needle, air filter, free mods (check sticky threads). then i'd find a used 300cc cylinder, mmatz has a whole kit actually he's selling. there you go. oh yeah, add a 13tooth front sprocket. with just a pipe and jets the 250 is pretty fun, it is noticeably more powerful. heck, with just the $13 front sprocket swapout, the power is improved. you have so many options with that type of cash. if you want total horsepower, you'll want to go with a whole exhaust system. but the majority of weight and power loss comes from the oem muffler.
There's a 2002 KLX300 cylinder and piston on eBay right now at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-...81237631QQrdZ1.

And thanks to mmatz, I will also be doing a Thumper Racing 340 kit real soon. I can't wait!

It seems that the only thing listed at their website is a 292cc kit. I sent them an email to ask them why the 340 is not listed.

Hi mustang,
That 292cc cylinder, piston and rings are on the way. Did you decide to go with the 340cc big bore from Thumper Racing? I thought you were leaning toward installing the 292cc and then seeing how you felt. Like I said, those parts are in excellent condition and I wouldn't have a problem installing them on my bike.

Just a follow-on. I got a reply via email saying that they still offer the 340cc kit, but you need to contact them by phone. Why they don't list it at their website, I'm not quite sure, but it's nice to know we have this option. Maybe they're not equipped to deal with volume orders of that item.

Oh, I feel like 340cc's, but my checkbook keeps arguing with me! The big factor is that I need to get a carb to match the big-bore kit, and that doubles the price. I'm also working on a custom exhaust (more on that later). So financing the project is the problem. What I need is a sponsor!"The Sobe, Garnier, Go Daddy.com Kawasaki KLX250s was runnin' just awesome today!"

I've heard nothing but good things about L.A. Sleeve, which is what the Thumper Racing kit uses. So given that there is almost no price difference between the Thumper Racing kit and Kustom Kraft kit, I'm going to with Thumper Racing.

Just curious, what is the current price of the 340cc kit. I got mine off of ebay for $525.00 including shipping. The seller has the 340cc kit on his bike (KLX300).He had aback up but said that after a couple of years he felt like his motor was pretty much bullet proof and he didn't need it. So I decided to go that route instead of 331cc.

One's a sleeve (Thumper Racing) while the other (Kustom Kraft) uses a Nikasil Coating. If they are the same price, I'd go with Kustom Craft. A sleeve is less reliable no matter who makes it or installs it.

Kustom Craft also has a very good reputation. I wouldn't sacrifice reliablitiy for a 9cc difference. If you were starting with your own 250cc jug and sleeving that to save money, that's understandable...but ifyou are starting with the 292cc jug and can get the nikasilcoating for the sameprice of a sleeve job, why not go with Kustom Craft? Am I missing something here?

No, I hope your not missing anything. I think you are spot on with the questions. My origional plan was to go with the 331cc and go through Kustom Kraft. But after learningabout a 340cc sleeved kit on ebay, I bought it! Iwill keep youupdated.
