Default Battery not charging above 1500rpm

Had a brand new battery lose it's charge after a day out on fire roads. I checked the battery voltage after charging back at the garage and it was around 12.6V. When idling it goes up to about 13.6V and drops below 13V when I increase the revs.

From the service manual I checked if I was getting 45V from the alternator. I do on idle and then it drops down to nothing when increasing revs. Bike has only done 800 miles but has been dropped a couple of times. My assumption is that it's a faulty rectifier.

Any thoughts?

Also checked the timing with a strobe and the timing mark is about 10 degrees to the left of the top notch when at 4000rpm....it sure sprayed out some oil as well.

I'm not really confident I know what I'm doing so any advise would be greatly received.

BTW, setup is 351 kit and pumper carb installed.

I think your right, never rebuilt one for a bike though... just a few older cars... is it possible to swap it out for a new one?

yeah....got one on order. I was surprised that so much oil was spurting out when checking the timing. I've only done it on cars before and never had oil come out of the observation hole.....is that normal?

Mine does that too, making it nearly impossible to check timing at high rpm.

If anybody comes with a solution, I'm interested.

Timing is to be set @ 10deg BTDC @ 1300rpm, why are you running 4000rpm?

Service manual says to check timing at 4000 rpm.

Sorry, you are correct. I was writing this from memory. All the electrical checks were done at 4000rpm but ignition timing was checked at 1300rpm. It's not adjustable on my '09 unless you play around with the cams...which is way over my head ;-)

Ignition timing is not adjustable on the 06-07 generation too. The manual suggest to check timing just to ensure everything is in good order, but it is pretty guaranteed that if you have non-erratic ignition at any rpm, then everything is fine with the ignition system.

In my case I wanted to map the ignition timing precisely over the rpm range for my "research" purposes
