Backfiring when shifting with 1/4 throttle

I don't think your rich. I think you're way rich. Unless you have a big bore, that is.
I'm running essentially the same bike (klx300 can and no snorkel) with a 128Keihin MJ and it's a little rich. And I'm in the 2nd clip position on the N1TC needle whereas you're on the 3rd clip on the DJ.
The 128K MJ is probably equivalent to a 122 or so in DJ numbering system.
But I'm in the minority because most people on this forum run much larger MJs than I.

I've always heard popping in the exhaust is too rich, the unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust, especially if you have an air leak.
If you haven't desmogged yet, the reed valve allows air into the exhaust to burn unburned fuel.
Popping in the intake is a sign of being too lean.

Really? I just followed the DJ instructions as per my mods. As well as a lot of others on this forum have had a lot of luck with the DJ stage 2 settings with the same mods at same altitude (sea level). It even suggests turning it to 3 turns out but I have it to 2.75.

I believe I don't have the CA model with all that smog stuff. Also, how can you tell if there is popping in the intake?

As to popping in the intake, on cars you see a fireball out the carb when they pop,not so easy to see with an air cleaner though.Still you can tell whether it's intake or exhaust.
Re: smog, I think they all have the reed valve smog, hard to see but easy to remove, just do a search on this forum.

The insulator color looks good, but the electrodes and bottom surface should not be black like that. Looks more like a plug pulled from one of my 2-stroke sleds...
