- Are you talking about a KLX250 or 300?? The standard rear sprocket is a 42. A 35 would be a midget and the bike to high geared. It would beincapapable of pulling top gear.
If you mean 45, then 14 would give higher top speed. a 15/45 would revert to standard gearing.

Contrary to everything that appears in this forum, lowering the gearing does not give the bike any more torque.

In trail riding it is matter of compromise. On my modified 250/300, I run 13/47. I find that I need a fairly low 2nd gear if I am to make slippery hill climbs OK. 1st is too low and can cause wheelspin. Any hill that requires some momentum is best taken in 2nd gear. I save the low 1st gear for very tight and slow stuff.
The bike is hopeless on the highway, but I trailer it to my ride spots.

Sorry Mekon and others. Your are right the bike is in fact a 14/42T sprocket mix. Don't know how I got it so wrong - trying to count the cogs in a badly light shed, I guess. What if I stayed with a 14T front and used a 39 (or 38T) rear sprocket. Would I get away with an even smaller rear sprocket? Remember I am hoping to get 2+hp extra out of the bike after the carbie, rejetting, breathing and exhaust mods.

These three in the front of the slide.
Drill the hole (7/64") next to the one the needle exits from.
